It's not all bad out on the road

There's the guy blowing leaves out of a flower bed who stopped the blower when I rode by so I wouldn't be covered in dust.

The motorist who slowed down to let me get around an open car door.

The telephone guy who was up a pole, probably freezing his @ss off in a rainstorm yesterday, who waved back as I rode by, definitely freezing my @ss off.

My boss who doesn't mind when I was a little late riding in after battling 25-30mph winds all the way.
(and I had started out in plenty of time, Pete!)

Now and then I experiment with waving at people waiting for buses, working in their yards, standing on street corners, etc., or waving and saying "Hi" to them--and I've found that the people in the impoverished parts of town are far more apt to wave back than those in the more affluent parts.

Elderly women almost always return my greeting.

Today in the elevator a guy asked about my ride. He said he was trying to find a way to ride in. I told him I do half-n-half (car/bike) and suggested it for him as well. You could see the wheels turning. Let's see if I can get the bike rake filled up by the end of the summer. Long shot but a worthy goal.

The "no acknowlegment" irritates me also, especially when I wave or give a nod. Come on we're all cyclists - kindred spirits. I don't want to generalize, but this seems to be more prevelent w/ roadies, especially when I'm on my way to the trail on my MTB - "Sorry, I don't wave to mountain bikers". I also encounter this on the trails, just not as much as on the road.

When out riding, I would say I come across three types of riders. They are fairly evenly split 33.3%.

1) The cyclist who is too busy/cool to give any acknowledgement.

2) The cyclist who is too busy looking at what kind of bike I have to look at me.

3) And fortunately, the ones who are willing to say hi and give a wave.

For all you out there who fit into #3...thank you. And don't stop waving at #1 and #2, they need the encouragement.

Things are still very civilized where I ride. I'm more surprised by bad behavior than surprised by good folks.
