I have Velocity Glider wheels

with a Sora rear derailleur <triple version>

Would a Shimano HG50 8Speed Cassette and an SRAM PC48 chain be correct choices for this?
Any other suggestions?

I also want flat-bar shifters... I am beginning to see that the mountain shifters are not necessarily compatible with the road derailleurs.
Anyon matched any of these successfully?

If you can find the Shimano SL-R440-8 shifter set, these are Sora shifters for flat bars. Should jive with your Sora front derailleur. Another option would be a Shimano mountain FD that can handle large chainrings, if you can find one. Then you could use Shimano mountain STI shifters. I believe the top-swing XTR's have a more gradual arc to their cage to handle bigger rings. Since you haven't really explained what you're building, you might want to elaborate. :)
The Sachs chain and HG50 cassette will be ok with eachother and with your wheels.

Thanks. That flatbar unit is pricey, so far as I have seen. I'll keep looking.
I am updating a 1973 Schwinn Speedster to be a garage sale hopper/utility bike.

Anyon matched any of these successfully? Shimano MTBshifters are comaptible woth shimano road rear derailers. There are issues with mixing shimano mtb/road ,shifters /front derailers.
