Well I needed a codec to play movies on the computer (file extension is .avi), and Windows Media player wouldn't work and failed to download the codec. So I downloaded DivX and it works fine on one computer that is on Windows 2000 but is too slow to play movies, so i've put it on here but its not working?

Media player isn't detecting it? I've tried re-installing ect but its not working...is there some setting i need to change or add on media player?

thanks!~ :)

Go find Media Player Classic.

When you install DIVX, pick "Custom" and deselect everything except for the DIVX codec itself. Uncheck the Divx Doctor, uncheck the Divx Playa, uncheck everything except for the codec..

Ok i'll try that Danno.

sunniho - I have classic on this comp and it works good, even 9 series works good with it, but on the other comp its like an upgraded version of 9 series, its all silver or something :S

Nope, still no luck. the DivX icon appears for a split second in the toolbar then then vanishes. I think its because its Windows Media Player 10 or something and its not working with it. I'll try downloading Player 9 or classic now...

Nope, Media 9 dosn't work with XP anymore so says Microsoft and classic still needs the codec. ARG. WHAT IS THIS DAM CODEC I AM LOOKING FOR!

(its an .avi file btw). Anyone have any suggestions??

I have IrfanView 2.90, it plays avi's as does WinAmp. Fugg Media Player, microsucks soft!

Use WinAmp. WMP is awful compared to it for most things. Except DVD playback which is rather good on MP.

DivX works fine on WMP10. you can download the beta Ghostspot (i believe its called) it can be used to scan for missing codecs or other codec problems that could be wrong. I've been using WMP to play videos since version 8 and I love it and have had few problems

I have Divx and it works fine with a couple of likely illegal copies of movies my friend made me, but I would like to know if there are any programs I could download that would allow me to copy a DVD in the form of Divx and save it on my computer. Can anybody help me out with this?

There are, Not sure if Nero would be able to help in this or not.

I had this exact same problem just yesterday, except when I googled DIVX M-PEG 4, I was able to find what I wanted and download it. I use Windows Media player vs. 9, which works fine, on an XP professional system.

Wait, I've got it. I use WMP 9, and I just downloaded codec Dvix MPEG-4. Can't remember from where, but google will solve that :D . If you use WMP 9, this should solve the problem. Previously, .avi video clips would not play in WMP, but thanks to this codec, they do now.

Good luck,
RBM

Right well i installed DivX AGAIN, and it now works on Windows media player. I used DIvX player, but it seems to use a lot of CPU and sometimes skips or freezes. If the problem happens again i'll look at downloading some of the stuff you all said above :).

thanks!

Thanks for the link Danno. I'm far to computer stupid to figure out what option to use, so I'll have one of my computer literate friends figure this one out for me.
