Where: Corner of 31st and Crown in Vancouver, BC (31st ave has cars parked on both sides of the street).
Who: Me and a Mini-Van.

What do I do: Coming down Crown, Think that a slowing-down vehicle (on 31st) will come to a complete stop because she has seen me -- and waltz straight into the path of the min-van.

(My wife had just sailed through the intersection and the driver kept going through the intersection while not looking in my direction. Since it was raining, I forgot to and couldn't make eye contact with driver. If I had done that, I wouldn't up be for this award).

What happens?: My bike gets hit at about 25-30Kmph, making contact with panniers, I fly off the bike and land on terra firma. Ride back home and take cage to work.

Damage: bends my rear rack a little, destroys my lunch box within the panniers, minor scruffs to nice ortlieb panniers, bad road rash on right thing and left calf, Bum right elbow. Gotta take Bike to LBS to get it checked out. Preliminary estimates are mild damage and bent rear rack (GIANT by Topeak).

Damage to Mini-van: Scraped pain in the front fender and a bent license plate. Dunno what the damage (in $) is gonna be. Gave her my phone# and address.

Fault: MINE!I guess I am also up for the Darwin Awards now... I feel to STUPID!

Moral of Story: Always stop at stop signs and never play cat-and-mouse games with cars and NEVER expect them to stop for you when they have right of way. I got caught up in the "let's get as fast as possible to work" race. Maybe I should try that race while riding "legally"..

Cheers!
Narayan

PS: I wanted to post this yesterday, but was ashamed to do that.

PS2: Posted this in the BMX forum by mistake. Boy! I am on a roll!!! :'(

THV - Well done for having the courage to admit you were wrong.

You can't be that brain dead as I think you've learnt your lesson (albeit the hard way). Hope the bike's back in use soon.

PS welcome to the forum.

Wow, that was a tough lesson to learn!

At least you're ok except for the road rash.
It sounds like the bike fared better than you. :( ;)

There is no shame in admitting you were in the wrong.

Do I understand you right in saying that you didn't stop at a stop sign, that you just breezed through it?

If so, then I want to urge you not to do this anymore! Yikes. It's not just dangerous-- as, unfortunately, you discovered-- it's infuriating to drivers and can get you a ticket.

I'm very glad you're not injured-- your lesson could have been costlier still.

So, be careful!

In the meantime, I may be misinterpreting your experience or views on road cycling, but in case I'm not you might want to see the following:

Great story, Narayan. Your sense of humor is admirable in the face of personal suffering.

But you don't get my vote on the BDB Award. Sorry! (I like you too much, already.)

Hey all:

Thanks for the comments...

I have been driving since, and hope to get back on Thursday (when my bike makes a return)...

We will probably change the tires on my wife's bike (she has hybriddy slicks) because she feels uncomfortable riding in Vancouver rain with them on. And then, its back to our 40 km a day commute...

I soooo miss the bike.

I got a call from ICBC already (the govt-run money-swal, err.... Insurance Company. They were asking if I was okay. Gotta call them back.

Cheers!
Narayan

PS: regarding the street smarts link, thanks a lot! I have been bike commuting since 1997 (first in the bay area, California, Yikes! and now Vancouver). I think I just took things for granted, and became a kamikaze cyclist. Won't do that EVER again. Expensive lesson learnt.
