Stevie Wonder making blind jokes? Would that fall under "irony" or "self-deprecation"?
Isn't Kelly Clarkson the cutest? She's so blown away by her own fame. Good for her. . .
Do you ever get the impression that U2s other members think Bono is a bit of a blowhard?
The Kanye West/Jamie Foxx performance was a huge production. Very entertaining.
Looks like Mariah Carey is gaining a lot of weight in those arms of hers. Jiggly jiggly jiggly
Sly Stone is on stage but his brain must be on another planet. See kids, that's what years of drug abuse does to you. . .
Christina Aguilera looks good, but I think I like her a little better when she's slutted-up a bit more.
And finally, I'm so glad I have Tivo because there's no way I'd sit through 3 1/2 hours of that.

1. Self-deprecation
2. Yes.
3. Absolutely. They've said as much. He's said as much.
4. Jamie Foxx's sense of self-importance is growing to near-Sting proportions.
5. Why is she still around?
6. Why is he still around.
7. I agree, but I don't know why.
Must get Tivo.

Kanye West = Annoying *ss!
Yes, Mariah does need to be careful that she doesn't let herself go. Would be a shame. She's looking rather plump.
Yes, Kelly Clarkson does seem genuine and real. I have a friend in the Radio Industry who has met here twice and says she is really that nice in person.
Was there any doubt that one of the most overated bands (U2) would get a grammy of some type!? Seriously people...that was a given. And yes, I agree they always show Bono in every clip. But I suppose the other members have resigned themselves to the fact that it's the nature of the beast shall we say.
It was pretty much a snooze fest IMO.

Seriously! She is!!
Skipped it last year.
Skipped it this year.
Will skip it next year.
I hear snippets in the news about who won what and don't care.

saw the first 20 minute or so....
Did Madonna forget the leg-warmers for that 80's Jane Fonda workout outfit?
Stevie was cool riffing a capella on "Higher Ground." He can do that all day if he wants, as well as make self-depricating jokes about his eyesight. He's Stevie Frickin' Wonder. Oh yeah, it was funny when he told his co-presenter she better not be putting spit in his harmonica. Ha ha!!
Kelly Clarkson looked honored and overwhelmed, but did she just forget or does she not like the good folks at American Idol who put her on the map?
Sheryl Crow was in the crowd... she needs a meal. Poor thing may not be eating well with the breakup going on. Ladies, take note.... exposed ribs are not attractive.
Coldplay... hmmm.... is it me or do they seem to aspire to be U2, but don't have the presence about them? They are an okay band, but not yet worthy of the rock stratosphere.
Then I fell asleep. It's the Grammys, so no big loss to me.
Mariah is probably not very toned, but how many of the average females out there are toned in the upper body? As far as getting fat, you must like sticks. She's like a size 4. If you think that's plump, then I feel for you. But then again, some men like women that they could pluck their arms off and floss their teeth with. ;)
Kelly C. is just not my idea of a great singer. She's too pop. I just can't believe she won over such talented people in that second category she where won a Grammy.
Kanye's production was great. I just cracked up so bad when he was like "let the 5 second censors begin". They still didn't filter out all the cursing. I guess the 5 seconds just wasn't enough! :) I loved seeing the college kids out there playing in the band and the frat/sorors doing their stepping out on stage. And I loved Jamie's production of Golddigger. But Kanye said he felt that song was the one that should have received the most accoloades and it got nothing- so he was very determined to play that song at the Grammy awards and make a big production of it. He didn't disappoint at all.
U2 didn't deserve half the Grammy awards they got- c'mon, that album really had just one good song on it... how it beat out albums like "The Emancipation of Mimi" and "Late Registration", which were both better albums with more experimentation (especially "Late") with different music styles and more risk taking just makes me shake my head. Again, the voting was bogus, just bogus.
Sly was on stage, but he DIDN'T want to be there- no one was sure if he was even going to really participate at all, but he finally did show up reluctantly and play a few bars before disappearing offstage. Sly's a big recluse, and it was a first time for me to see him on stage ever. I was thankful for the opportunity to see the guy in concert. Didn't anyone notice how many times they had to shout his name to get him on the stage to begin with? He really didn't want to be there. I'm glad they got him to change his mind, even if only for a few refrains. Go Sly!
Christina is there because she can sing well live. Unfortunately, few singers can really sing live well. Be thankful it wasn't some no talent like Britney Spears straining through some out of tune vocals and chewing her gum like some countrified yokel.
I liked the whole Stevie/Alicia exchange. I thought it cute and entertaining. And not only that, their acapella, spontaneous rendition of "Higher Ground" was one of the better performances that night.
Good performances (musically): Gorillaz/Madonna, Kanye/Jamie, Christina/Herbie Hancock, Stevie/Alicia. I wish Gwen Stefani was able to do "Holla Back Girl", but being that pregnant, I could see her saying "nah".
Oh- Tivo da bomb. I went back and forth between Tivo and the Grammy awards show.

The Grammys have always been a complete joke for those who like decent music, this year's no different. The most upsetting thing is seeing what used to be an incredible band, U2, become this shambling parody of themselves. Yuck.

Agree with Koffee, U2 got way more than they deserved for their new CD, Kanye was robbed, Kelly Clarkson seems nice but her act is just okay.
Jay-Z + Linkin Park deserve credit for their mishmash but didnt deserve to win. IMO, the Grammys are too white and too safe. Green Day's Boulevard of Broken Dreams is record of the year(too safe)? How To Dismantle an Atomic Bomb over Late Registration for album of the year (too safe and too white)? What is going on?!
It is so rare for a rap album to win album of the year. :( Kanye (and most talented rappers) will never have a chance. You have a better chance of getting fisted in a cornfield by a cow. :D
I don't really like rap, but I listened to every song released off "Late Registration". Very different musical styles. Good duets. Good lyrics (though some controversial, but that's Kanye). Very good sampling, mixing, etc. I was blown away at the difference in musical styles from one song to the next.

*Disclaimer* I am a U2 fan.
That being said, the last 10-12 years of their music is nowhere as groundbreaking or influential as Achtung or Joshua so I find it hard to explain why they are critically more successful now than they ever have been.
I love HTDAAB; it incorporates jazz, pop, rock - even a bit of rap. I think U2 is being rewarded by making music the 20-45 white demo in America loves. AND their music has become more commercially palatable ever since Achtung. They have never made an bona fide rock song before vertigo in the true definition of the genre in my opinion.
I also believes the lefties in the academy are swayed by Bono's politics and activism; something that the other notables don't exhibit as much. The billboard awards have not been as kind to U2 as evidence of this.
Bono is right, Kanye is next, although U2 is purported to release another album this year with leftovers from the Atomic Bomb sessions.

Did Madonna forget the leg-warmers for that 80's Jane Fonda workout outfit?
Madonna is up to 1980? Madonna hit it big in 83. That gives her three years to go until she has gone the full circle. She'll have to dress up like she did back then! It might be 'death by nostalgia' for Madonna
Coldplay... hmmm.... is it me or do they seem to aspire to be U2, but don't have the presence about them? They are an okay band, but not yet worthy of the rock stratosphere.
Coldplay. Worlds most boring band.
it was predictable. The Grammy's have never been known for
forward thinking, i.e. Jethro Tull win for heavy metal.
I have one criticism, and it's more for the producers than anyone else,
why the hell do they have to include every up and comer percieved to be
hot singer in production numbers? Couldn't they leave Sir Paul to sing yesterday
without Jayzee (sp?) standing there mouthing "yeah yeah" every so often?
ok, end of rant.
Christina has a killer set of pipes, it's nice to see she is stretching out
into new areas instead of that pap that britney, mariah, kelly et all call
singing. And Alicia. . . dayum.

Couldn't they leave Sir Paul to sing yesterday
without Jayzee (sp?) standing there mouthing "yeah yeah" every so often? So true. While I was watching that performance, I couldn't help but think that this was like watching someone spraying graffiti over a Gauguin original.
But Sir Paul needs to share some of the blame as well. I'm sure he gave his permission for Jay-Z to be part of this musical train wreck.

I dunno, "Sir Paul" has never not sucked in my lifetime, and I'm 31 years old. I really liked the Beatles, but dang. Sort of like Sting....
Somehow, the Grammys have been doing this "let's stick two unlikely pairs of people together and see what happens!" crap since Eminem and Elton John (which I loved and worked really well). This year was the same... it just didn't work.
A lot of the different acts they had just fell flat for me. I thought the Jamie Foxx and the Kanye was great- but I expected great things from Kanye for his performance. I loved the Gorillaz/De La Soul/Madonna performance, though the Madonna stuff wasn't as good as the Gorillaz/De La Soul part. U2/Mary J. Blige? Yuck *dry heave*. Somehow, Mary J. Blige gets the worst duets... she cannot pull it off. She takes too many liberties with her music, and the people she does duets with can't follow them, so it sounds inharmoniously hideous and discordous. God, next time give that woman a solo! Paul McCartney was a big yawn yawn. The Sly and the Family Stone songs were totally destroyed... they took some of my favorites and sang them in such a way that they're almost not my favorites anymore. I will have to perform a lobatomy on my brain to remove that memory. The only thing I can say is that I think Sly only came on in the end to shut them up and salvage his songs- but quickly left when it became apparent that the prima donnas on stage would scream out his vocals anyway. What's the point? Linkin Park and Jay-Z? *dry heave* It's a mess no matter how you place it.
Linkin Park and Jay-Z was a big ole disappointment. I don't think they should have gotten the Grammy for best duet (or whatever that was). There were MUCH better duets in that category... I would have loved to see Missy Elliot win with Ciara... or even the Stefani/Eve collaboration. The Kayne/Legend collaboration was just as good. Linkin Park and Jay-Z? Someone's on crack.
I'm giving up on the Grammys. I'm just going to watch the MTV awards- it's much more realistic and has better performances.

Well, I was at work for most of the Grammys(I think). Don't really know when they came on and didn't particularly care. Just more fodder for the late night comedians, in my opinion.
I don't keep up with awards shows anymore(unless it's to see hot chicks) for pretty much the same reason I don't pay any attention to college football. Any award/ranking one gets that doesn't necessarily have anything to do with how well one actually performs is not worth having....

I find it hard to explain why they are critically more successful now than they ever have been.
Their later music is more accessable (read - less parochial) to the greater US buying public and they have good PR. After Rattle & Hum, they were over for me. I find the lamenting of whats become of U2 more prevalent with people like myslef who were around when they were singing Gloria on a barge on MTV. That back when MTV was actually showning music videos.
i caught a few minutes here and there... the musical numbers were awful. Enough with aging geezers of the 70s... i'm over 40 and I'd rather see Alexis on Fire or something. You know.. the bands who are still making records???? Who can still SING???

Mary J Blige BUTCHERED a classic U2 song. She butchered it in toronto for the hurricaine benefit show, and she butchered it again at the grammys.

HTDAAB is a great album. Koffee's comment that there is only one good song on the album, i would have to disagree with.
Havent made a bona fide rock song before vertigo?? Disagree, theres a lot of stuff from boy/war/october that would fall into that category.
Bono's political activisim, its a shame that if that persuaded the voters vote. Politics shouldnt have anything to do with the music. Ive been to a couple of their shows recently, they absolutly rocked, but Bono's whole poverty campaign was a real downer for the 5 minutes he was rambling on.
And U2 coming out with a new album this year? Ha!! it'll never happen, they are always late releasing albums. Im guessing another year at least.
Im not really sure whats with all the U2 hating, they are extremely talented. I think the people that hate u2 are the same type of people that hate Lance Armstrong.

you know what's wrong with the Grammy's in my not so humble opinion?
its homogenized, its clean and oh so PC.
lets take everyone and mix em up. Mary J will sing U2 song,
Jayze can sing beatles ballad, Christina can sing (boy howdy) well whatever
the hell it is she can sing. . .
Let Mary J belt out a real R&B tune, let the girl sing.
Jayze, rap, hip hop trip hop you get the picture.
and Christina? give her an old torch song and let he dig in. Sometimes
I listen to her and it's the second coming of Janis and a third helping of
Big Mama Thornton, or maybe Bessie Smith. dayum.
