View Full Version : Raleigh 20...worth?
"Raliegh 20 in. Fold up ..made in England.. Design # 931.741 Turin # 4174. Bike is in Very good cond. White gold trim .. Has original tire pump ,and luggage rack... new tires and tubes.. "
So I'm going to be taking a look at this bike tomorrow. Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of it to post. I don't know anything about folders but I saw this and thought, "Why not?" Any opinions would be appreciated. Is $165 too much?

We know that Raleighs 20 on E.bay have prices that get out of any logic limits reaching prices over 250 USD. For a good vintage road racing bicycle 165$ would be a fair price. For a Raleigh 20 I think it is a bit to much, but this bicycle is a classic and the demand is high. Now, where are you going to see the bicycle? is it from a bicycle dealer? from someone specialized on vintage bicycles? From a private person who knows how to evaluate bicycles? from someone who saw prices for Raleigh 20's somewhere and is trying to get the most money with the deal? The answer to these questions are important for us, as elements to help you setting the right price. Personaly, I would take 120$ in my pocket ready to make the deal. If the seller agrees with this amount of money, in the moment, I would take it.
Before or after buying the bicycle, never mind, take pictures and post for us :)

I own a Raleigh Twenty myself and paid about $125 including shipping. I would suggest going to Ebay, search for Raleigh Twenty, and check the completed items. That should tell you the going rate. That sounds a little pricey...I think you could get it for $20-40 less, but I could be wrong.
The other part of the question is, is it 'worth it' to you. Are you planning to upgrade it and fix it up? Will you keep it stock? Do you enjoy doing work on bikes? Even if you are just going to keep it stock, you'll probably end up spending more money on cleaning it up and some other stuff. My raleigh twenty project took upwards of a year to 'complete' it and I still plan to do more upgrades. It has been an incredibly enjoyable experiene and I take great joy and pride in riding on something I put together myself. If this is something you are interested in, and this bike is 'local,' even if you could save an extra$25 by waiting for a better deal, this might be the right deal for you. If you are looking for a 'ready to ride' bike and this isn't in mint condition, it may be worth it to wait,

$165 is kind of high. I recently bought one in very good condition for $115 in Seattle, but the pump was missing. What do you plan to do with it?
keep it in my car so when it breaks down (and it will) I have a way to get where I need to go. I'm not exactly sure what I want to do with it. At the worst I have a friend looking for a folder that I could probably sell it to. It might be fun to ride in an alleycat here on sunday.
I paid $145 for mine, in very good original condition with all accessories (pump, vinyl saddle bag, wrench and owners manual). It hadn't been ridden much recently and pretty much needed a complete overhaul, no big deal. The original asking price was $175. Because cycling is so popular, Portland prices tend to be a little higher than in some other places.
@ MK, i pretty second what all the other people are saying, they are great bikes that will last virtually forever, having said that when they are stock they should be considered pretty heavy and slow but strong. Tinkering with them will take a lot of time and can get pricey unless you are good at sourcing. I think if you can knock some of the price (say 10 to 50 dollars) you can't really go wrong. You can then always ride it for a few weeks, decide if you like it and what you want if for, and if you are carefull with it and decide you don't want it after all, you can sell if for the same amount.
You might want to check my or the many other pages on the Twenty for more info or you may also want to consider a Downtube folder, not all that much more expensive, new and and no tinkering needed.

Well, I bought it. I'll post some pictures when I get batteries for the camera.

I paid UKP 10 (?about USD 17) for this one a few weeks agodeal of the year. i almost bought another 20 the other day for $40cdn, mainly for a parts bike, but then common sense got the better of me. saw one on craigslist last week for $65obo, so there's definately deals out there if you're willing to wait.
i should borrow a camera and post some pictures of my ride... been meaning to do that for a while.
Both those folders look in superb condition and are both money well spend! Hope you guys keep us posted on any changes you make to them!
I've been looking for the 6 months and have gone to at least 10 goodwills around my area and finally pick one up for 150cdn which I think it was over-priced. I'm up-grading this bike and basically only the frame will be used.

here's pic :)
Ok...I can't post any pic by using the "Manage Attachments"....anyone knows why? :(
For an attachment, the file size has to be less than 100k. Are the pictures too big?

Both very cute bikes: Reescylist: I had that very same bike in my watchlist - well done on winning - she looks a beaut!
I have a pretty all-encompassing saved-search so pretty much anything twenty in the UK comes my way - I got some new-old stock decals last week... Yet to arrive though. Nice to see one in stock white too. The love of twenties is growing! ;)
Other even rarer bikes to look out for being the Dawes Kingpin - I see one every couple of months on ebay.
Finally - shameless plug for my Twenty site (link below). I aim to sort out the IE incompatability soon and am appealing for 'readers rides' in new section so if anyone here with a Twenty that wants to be featured on it - could they send me pictures, a brief biog, (inc any upgrade details) and whether you want your email published on the web... Thanks!

Must have a twin! Mine came from the local 'recycling centre', not EBay (would probably have cost more).
