How much does a bike box weigh?

Man, trying to sell a frame and shipping it is a real bear.

Just realized that I could probably get a better answer if I explained my situation. I'm shipping a frame with forks via Fedex ground. Is an industry standard bike box the way to go? Or is there something smaller for just frames?

There is a smaller box for just frames. It is much cheaper to use it than a bike box. When shipping bikes or frames you go by measurements. The weight is useless.

Here's another little tip. Once you get your box and weight, check Fed-Ex ground vs. UPS for price. Every time I've shipped a bike/frame it's been much more economical.

I have shipped a couple of complete mountain bikes in the past month using boxes I got from the local shop. Manufacturers are very smart in sizing the boxes. A typical box will have dimension similar to 51x7x31. This will fall into the category UPS defines as oversize 2. If you change the width of the previous example to 8" instead of 7" you will now be in a oversize 3 category. In my case this changed the shipping cost from $32 to $108. It is very important to make sure you convince the person at the shipping counter that it really measures only 7" and not 8" like they first measured :D As far as weight is concerned I would guess the box and shipping materials will add 6-8 lbs. As previously mentioned if you are shipping just a frame there are smaller boxes available but they are harder to come by.

It is much easier to enter the shipping information on-line and print your shipping label yourself. Then either have the carrier pick it up or just drop it off at a drop-off location.
