Foo - I'm so happy, I just registered for the spring soccer season........

Oh joy! I have now made a spot for myself in this springs roster! I am so happy about it, just had to share it, and I know there is a significant population of football nerds on BF to share it with. :D

Thanks for the reminder. I need to send my check off to my team's captain. The season in Portland doesn't start until April, but they want the team fees in several months in advance. I hope we can get enough players pay up ahead of time this year. Last season the captain fronted the money and got re-imbursed, but it's like $900 for a team! :eek:

I need to get new cleats, too. I hate committing to a new pair. On my current pair the toe cleats are about half an inch further back than my previous ones. It took me forever to get used to. Every time I'd try to do soft touches with my toe, the ball would just roll right under.

I had to quit mine. I ran out of time for my men's season when school got nasty, and I ran out of all time (so no co-ed either) when I finally got this job. What position do you play?

thats not expensive at all. One team i played for used up so much practice time that it was $250/person

Last fall I payed $105, not very much at all to play club. That did not include uniforms, however, since we were fortunate enough to have a sponsor. I'm playing a slightly lower-key league this spring.

$900 is not too bad. Our roster last fall had fifteen people, which makes arounf $1550. We played a lot of games, though. The registration I payed was only small fraction of the money I spent over all on equipment, food, tournament expenses, etc. It was expensive, but well worth it.

I just bought this season's cleats, some T90's on a wicked sale. They are ecxellent cleats, A) if they fit properly and B), once you break them in. I'm in the break-in stage noe. OUCH. Adidas cleats typically break in almost instanteneously and are very comfortable, which is nice.

Oh, I know $900 isn't much for a team...even a semi-rec team, it just kind of surprised me the first time I heard the number. It sounds like you play some fairly competitive soccer. I just do the local in-town league, this season I think we're registering in division 3 out 4 (not counting the old-man leagues). Division 1 is supposed to be pretty intense.



What position do you play?
I play stopper. What about the rest of you?

I play striker. I am not quite hopeless at the other positions, but my strengths definitely lie within the forward position. Pace(workin on it), good one touch passing(the same), and an ability to catch through balls.

I was starting striker for most of last season, scoring 7 goals in roughly twenty games. Hardly impressive, especially when our top score mad well over 20 net bangers, but it was mu first season of a competitive sport, so I was pleased with the result.

Through balls are probably my worst, but I can usually drive the ball up the outside and center ok, so I like to switch with the wings when I get the chance, but mostly I hang back and try to let the keeper catch some sleep.

Thanks! Luckily for me, we had some defenders and midfielders with a good leg, so a through ball was not a novelty.

I can remember my favorite goal(s) last season. I was watch ing the offside line very closely, and my teamate had posession and was running up the center of the pitch, swamped by opponents. He made it to about 30 yards out, when I called for a through. I was directly in front of him, about 5-10 yards, and he did a beuatiful pass up throug a crowd of players that had me running inot the box. It took the ball just inside the box and actually finished properly. The goalkeeper stayed on his line and did not come out to me, (bad idea). I somehow managed to pull off a nice finish right inot the left corner.

That left me feeling good. We won that game 7-0.....

My best play during last season wasn't quite as glorious as that. I'd broken my nose about 2 weeks earlier (playing with little kids of all things!), so I was a pretty tender still. We ended up trying to clear a blocked shot in front of the goal. The keeper was still recovering from diving to block the shot, and somehow I've got two guys, one with the ball and one open. They trade the ball so I move to close off the shot and he shoots it hard right into my nose. It would've been a goal had I not been there. Right as he does that, the ref whistles a foul for something just prior, so the goal wouldn't have counted anyways. So now I'm bleeding all over the place again and thinking I rebroke my nose but it was all for nothing! I can take the pain, but at least give me a little glory! :cry:

I'm starting to really crave some outdoor action again. The last few years I've mostly played indoor, which just doesn't have that spiritual feeling to me as out on natural grass. Also I started getting injured playing indoor, so I've been riding my bike a lot more instead. This spring I'll probably just start getting in on some organized pick-up games just to curb my soccer addiction.

Wow, that's pretty rough. I'm surprised the ref called a foul right before a potential goal (unless the foul was on the part of your team). There have been several instances when goals were imminent, and they came, but were preceded bu awful fouls in the box. Sorry, I was talking about my team.

If you don't mind (like you have a choice:)), I'll share my second favorite goal of the season. It was my second game, late in the first half. Once again I was watching the offsides line carefully, and fairly close to the center of the field. We had just cleared a ball from the box, and our wacky good mid. Jared gave me a through ball. I outpaced the opposition's defence, not by exceptional pace on my part, but rather awful pace pn theirs! I ran up till about 20 yards from the goalmouth, when the goalie came out to meet me. I chipped it through his outstrecthed hands and into the back of the net.

I didn't really think before lobbing that ball, so I can't credit it to any genius, but it was cool anyways. I was exceptionally lucky in that the worst that happened to me in the way of injuries were a few minor bruises, bad shoes, banged knees, smashed feet, etc.

You get the point. I was lucky. In our end of season tourney, our No. 1 goalie, who was really good, had his fingers kicked/stomped really hard. Poor dude, I think it broke it. Then th opposition went on to take out No. 2 by kicking him in the back, and No. 3 I won't even talk about. They won that game 6-3 or something, but we beat them, a Premier team, 4-3 in our first game. I think their coach didn't like the fact that ome upstart team had beaten his whizbang side.

Good on you. I played indoor intermittently throughout the winter, but there is nothing quite like your studs gripping the ground, the space, the air, etc.

I like outdoors better too. I would come and play with you but I live in IN.:cry:

Here's me in the middle jumping up. This game was very near the end of the season. We won 5-1, homegame. I even scored!

Homegames are best that way.
