I have a friend that wants to go loan shopping. He is concerned about the banks doing credit checks and how this will affect his credit rating. I know that back in the days, my dad's era that this was an extremely big thing. Is this the same big taboo now a days or has the penatly for credit checks reduced since almost every major company does it?

i went loan shopping 5 months ago for a car, and one bank told me that i would need a co-signer and they asked me if i still wanted to go through with the credit check since it would affect my credit score.
