My wife and I are thinking of buying a tandem so that we can ride together. When we go out for rides I tend to ride ahead of her and have to slow down the pace so that she can keep up. The trouble is that I am 6' 6" tall and she is about 5' 10" tall. Are there tandems available that would be able to get us a comfortable fit?

Depending on your leg length . . . maybe.
Co-Motion, Burley, 'tana and others build 23x20 (large) frames that *may* fit. Have heard, but cannot recall brandname, of a 24" captain sizing.
Otherwise it will be cu$tom sizing.
Have had a Co-Mo built for a couple that's 6'7" and 5'3" (a 27x19 frame).

I do not think that there are any "stock" frames that will comfortalby fit you. I am 6'4" and my wife is 5'10"; we have a Co Motion Big Al tandem that when ordered, was the biggest size they carried. The rear for my wife fits great, but the front end fits like a 60cm road bike. Since I ride a 63-65cm road bike, the fit is a bit cramped for me. I have a long stem on the bike, and wide 48cm bars, and have learned to live with the fit.

You might be able to find an older 80's tandem that has a front end that is close to a 25" road bike. Other than that, you might look at getting a frame custom built. Check out Tom Teesdale. He is a cutom frame builder that lists his tandem frames for around $1700-1800. His website states that he will build the frame based on your single road bike sizing. http://www.tetcycles.com/

Of course the premier bike builder for tall riders is Richard Zinn. http://www.zinncycles.com He builds great bike for riders up to 7' tall. Of course, to afford them, you need to have recently retired from the NBA.

Another company to look at is Bike Friday. http://www.bikefriday.com/index.cfm I have seen several tall tandem teams on these frames.

Good luck with your bike search, tandeming is a blast.

I am 6'-3" with a 38" inseam and my wife is 6' with a 36" inseam. Dwan @ Co-Motion designed 3 bikes for us that fit better than anything we've owned in the past. When we were young and limber, fit wasn't that important, we just dealt with it and kept on hammerin' but now a custom fit is very important and I don't know how we ever rode a stock bike all those miles. If you're looking at a high end bike the additional for a custom build is well worth it. I see lots of couples who refuse to invest in a good quality properly fit tandem and end up not spending much time on it. We ride lots of miles a year so we get our moneys worth out of our bikes.

A stock Cannondale Jumbo/large will fit just fine.
