Well, to disagree, I think Van Morrison was better, although he achieved perhaps his greatest fame in the '60's. But, without saying, this is just my opinion.

If we're talking about rock vocalists, I think Freddie Mercury is near the top of the list. I'm also partial to Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham. As much as I love Pink Floyd, I won't mention Roger Waters...oops, guess I did, anyway.

Good thing David Gilmour did the lions share of the singing, eh?

Some more 70's vocalists:

Donald Fagen (Steely Dan)
Greg Lake (Emerson, Lake & Palmer)
Terry Kath (Chicago)
Mick Jagger (Rolling Stones)
Lowell George (Litte Feat)
Roger Daltry (The Who)
David Clayton Thomas (Blood, Sweat & Tears)
Peter Wolf (J. Geils Band)
Rod Stewart
Billy Joel
Elton John
Carley Simon
Pat Benetar

Art Garfunkle (Garfunkel?)
by far one of the best voices in folk/rock/pop

Rod Stewart custom made for R&B

Jon Anderson especially the early stuff (pre Fragile).

how about Gordon Lightfoot?

Pretty good when he was sober, but my favorite was Stan Rogers (http://www.ifred.ca/stanrogers/index2.html).

Oooff. Without naming names, there appears to be some confusion on what makes a great vocalist vs. a great performer vs. a great songwriter. C'mon, Mick Jagger? Roger Daltry?

Ronnie James Dio.

Eh why not? Would you ever confuse them for anyone else? They are instantly recognizable.

I was thinking of him when I saw the thread title.

Also, I'm surprised nobody mentioned Paul Rogers.

Stacy you are showing your age here girl.
Turn of the cards is one of my all time favourite albums
Mother Russia and Black Flame. . .
most female vocalists can't hold a candle to her (no pun intended).

Yeah, and my devotion to great music. I got to see them in Philly (Forrest Theater, I think) in the early eighties. Stunning show. Mother Russia is great, tho' I've always had a fondness for Scherrazade. A wonderfully woven tale.

Agreed. If all you've ever heard by her is Poetry Man then another listen is recommended. Voice like honey pouring from a silver pitcher, and covering an impressive range.

Joan Armatrading I think is more impressive than Ms. Snow.

Did anyone mention Aretha?

classic1

Aretha is 60's, not 70's, and no way can Joan Armatrading pwn Phoebe Snow in a sing off. Song writing contest yes, sing off, no! :)
