Try this...

Pandora.com (www.pandora.com)

Its a cool website where you make your own radio stations and it matches different bands and songs to the type of music for your radio station.

That site is awsome. It sounds like they will be launching a serious spam assault on my email account, but I don't read it anyway.

That page just made my favourites. Thanks.

I use a mix of Shareaza (http://www.shareaza.com/) and Bittorrent.
For bittorrent, you'll need a client - I recommend ABC (http://pingpong-abc.sourceforge.net/). You'll also need a torrent search site, I use Torrentz.com (http://torrentz.com/)

Use bittorrent for albums, Shareaza for single songs and ones you can't find a good torrent for. Then, of course, buy the CD. :)

if you have to much time on your hands and dont want to use a filesharing program try this......go to and artists webpage and they will usualy have there latest singles playing in the back ground through a flash player. Simply wip out real player (or anyother media player) and make a mono recording of the song right off there webpage.

Its time consuming, but as far as i know....not illegal.

I don't have any links off hand, but a lot of small-time artists will distribute their music freely. One of these days when I have time, I'll go exploring and see what I can find that I like, but I'm told there's some good stuff out there.

My friend killed a computer downloading music with lime wire, although judging by everybody's posts that must have been kind of rare. My theory is, burn your cd's for your friends, and have them do the same for you. I certainly don't feel guilty not paying for music, but I do like to watch out for the health and well being of my computer.

I love it how the immediate assumption is that the OP is talking illegally copied music.

There are internet radio stations as well.
There used to be a spyware free version of Kazaa called Kazaa Lite K++. This one was shut down by Sherman networks a year or two ago, but it is still available. I burned a copy on CD anticipating this.
Limewire works though

I find radio streams on shoutcast.com. It's a site run by Nullsoft (winamp) for people to send in links to their stations. There's a lot of worthless stations to sort through, but I've found some awesome ones on there.

If someone says "Is it still possible to get free music on the internet or did they shut down all the good sites allready?" chances are he's talking about something the RIAA would consider worth shutting down, i.e. illegal sites.

No high horse here, just pointing out why people may make the assumption. I'm not going to discuss bittorrent sites and azureus, but check out yahoo's launchcast, it's excellent, and brings up all sorts of suggestions for new stuff to um, buy. :)
