General Cycling Discussion - What is going on in Eastern US?

Last winter there was no snow in the city where I live. It was unusual.

Such storms are either not normal even for the Eastern US, are they?

I do not care what official meteorologists would have to say. I would like to hear from people, who live in there.

I'm not in Eastern US currently, but they do get some violent
storms in Nov. (I do remember a storm that dumped
11 inches of snow on Veterans day (Nov 11th ).
I think we are entering another el-nino cycle (oh sh*t
here we go again) and that may be causing some of
it. Others will say its Global warming, I don't know
but its not all that unusual.

when was this veterans day storm? did this happen prior to 1981? that may explain why i don't remember it.

we usually have snow in february and early march. in 93 or 94 we had a terrible storm in january where schools were closed long enough for us to have to make up days in june. winter here is not generally that bad, its pretty tame compared to other areas. 2-3 inches here is a lot of snow, and people panic at the threat of snow flurries. this winter maybe an exception, with predictions of it being very cold and very wet.

Location: 3 hrs north of NYC in central, eastern NY State.

October weather - entire month cold, with below normal temperatures - 45F or colder or daytime highs. Frost most nights and some low temps around 18F. Very wet with a couple of small snows - 1" or less. Generally, miserable.

July through September was unusually hot and dry.

Mid-winter snowstorms measuring in 1'-2' are common here, but we don't expect major snows until December. However, October 4, 1987 dropped 18" of snow on Albany, NY. Late November snows are not rare, but are usually smaller in scale - 6"-10".

I believe the storm was either 86 or 87, all I know is it
did some horrendous damage due to weight of wet snow.
It kind of shut the city down (but then so does 2 inches
of snow). I was living in Falls Church at the time. If I recall
correctly most of the snow melted off within 2 or 3 days.

It's very rare for us to get snow storms before January. I've lived here since 1983, and I can count on one hand the number of times we've had snow before X-mas. All of our really bad storms happen after December.

NOt unusual for us to get snow in november or even october (which doesn't last). OCtober was very cold here. We just had a few days of indian summer, probably caused by the warm air pumped up from those storm systems in the southern US. It was incredibly warm, temps in the high 50s or low 60s the last few days, but also very unstable and rainy. We don't usually get major snowstorms until late in nov or in december, the worst ones usually in the months of jan, feb, march. The almanac this year is predicting a warmer than average but very snowy winter.

We have not seen any global warming or global cooling; but around here we have noticed that for the last couple of years the weather is less temperate and we get more extremes.

Drought, in the dry season. Storms in the rainy season and records on the high and low end of the temperature range.
