Great little quote from Sky Yaeger (Bianchi VP and designer of lots of their bikes, including Pista and P-concept) in the current Riv Reader:

"I am baffled by urban hipsters riding fixed gear track bikes as fashion accessories and finding out they are not as practical or safe as they thought. I'm not talking about messengers or skilled riders, just to be clear. But most people should be riding a bike with brakes and a freewheel." -while discussing the San Jose.

honestly.
i've never met one of these hipsters.
i've met a lot of hipsters who ride track bikes, and a lot of people who are very fashionable with their bikes, but i think this whole bike-ignorance-meets-bike-fashion issue is way overblown.

many of us are stylin' urban kids with pretty bikes. and we know how to use em.

maybe i'm wrong.

i don't give a **** what sky yaeger has to say.

Ha ha!

I suppose most people should be riding bikes with freewheels and brakes. It's that hipster Sheldon Brown's fault.

haha, she should keep her mouth shut and be happy about the increased revenue. it's not as though bianchi is legally liable.

Actual point of contention:

"I am baffled by urban hipsters discussing fixed gear track bikes as fashion accessories on an internet forum and finding out they have wasted an entire day and do not have girlfriends. I'm not talking about messengers or Shants, just to be clear. But most people should be reading Gawker."

"Unskilled riders" don't ride fixed gear for very long. They either get skilled, or put the bike away, or sell it on ebay with some lame-ass explanation about why the nibs are still on the tires.

Whichever way it goes down I fail to see a problem for Bianchi.

I think the "clueless hipster" thing is played up way too much, but...

Once I did see a girl with 80's hair and heels riding a brakeless conversion with block pedals and bullhorns pointing straight down roll up in front of a gallery opening... unfair, really, sort of like when Vice magazine runs a picture of a ******** guy in the "Don'ts".

If Sky Yaeger is so great why is she designing all the new Bianchis with sloping top tubes? Blech. Bring back the crotchety old eye-ty-yan bike designers that stick with traditional geometry frames.

This is why there were no women explorers, they're unwilling to put their asses on the line to try something new!

Sky Yeager again:

"These things are a lawsuit just waiting to happen." "But, you know, there's just nothing more beautiful than a fixed-gear bike."

what makes her think messengers aren't hipsters?

seriously, most messengers I know who ride fixed used to ride mountain bikes. then one day someone convinced them to try riding brakeless fixed and they never stopped. it's not as if they have built-in fixed-gear riding genes. everybody needs to learn.

(of course i realize this does not apply to everyone.)

More like on top of sleeping bags, one gets too hot dewing it *in* the sleeping bag. If you're on a weeklong bike tour in Alabama in June. Not that'd I know. But how did you know it was a *RIMSHOT*

Funny, back in the 80's Schwinn could not understand why people were buying and riding "mountain bikes" on the road , so they decided not to cater to that market. Result, massive loss of market share and now they are on their 3rd life. Bianchi and every me too bike company might be just learning from Schwinn's big mistake.

then again... a whole lot of differences between mountain bikes on the street and fixed gears on the street.

seriously though, how many of those damn "can you help me make this bike a fixed gear for $20" questions have you answered in the time since you started working in a bike shop? How many of them have been from girls (or boys) exactly as described? I dunno, maybe I'm getting surly and cynical in my olditude.

Sky Yaeger, give us a celeste Pista again.

Yes, Yes. Perhaps a 631 or 853 Pista Superiore... in between Pista and Pista Concept or just available as a frameset.

While she's at it, 631/853 Celeste traditional geometry road and cyclocross frames as well.
