Alt Bike Culture - Tandem tall bike?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Anyone know if there are any or not? I was just thinking of how rediculous a tandem for people in the upper 6' bracket would look and the idea came to me.
That would be pretty nutty lookin'. Might be fun to try to build one though.

Cannondale makes their new road tandem in a size that would suit a rider up to about 6'6". I am 6'4" and have thought about going with the new Cannondale in order to get a better fit than my current tandem. There are several tandem builders that will cutom build a frame to fit any size rider: of course, anything custom is a bit pricey.

Methinks that guy got here from the new posts page, and not by clicking on the alt bike forum.
On topic, I'm certain I saw a picture of one made out of four frames welded together, 2 blue frames and 2 red frames. I can't remember where I saw it though.

Here's a tall tandem!
Not just tandem tall, but looks like two wheel drive and front/rear steer.
Wow. Ankle breakingly cool.

I can't tell whether that picture was taken before or after the crash.
Kinda looks like one of those peloton implosions.

Hell yes I mean like that, rockage.
Also, I really like the two wheel steering idea now.
I doubt two-wheel steer controlled by two different people would work very well... unless the two people practiced together for a very long time.
I'm also guessing that the high-wheeler tandem pictured above was a front-steer only. That is surely the least complicated all-wheel-drive drivetrain I've seen. :)

I've seen side by side tandem tall bikes. I can't find a picture anywhere but I've seen them.

our club built this tall bike tandy last year in adelaide, australia.
the fun part is that the tall guy has no control.

eiffel tower bikes and lamp lighter bikes were often tandems. the advantage is that the bottom chap is pedalling while the top chap is climbing - eliminating the need to climb like wild dogs are chasing you.

One fun thing about the tandem tallbike is that since tallbikes don't have brakes, the front person steers and the back person footbrakes.
The one pictured from May Day is "the Unridden". The top guy steers, the bottom guy's backrest is the turning steer tube. I think that after a certain height the top guy always has to steer, if you think about leverage you'll see what I mean. That bunk-bed tallbike shown from Iowa City is the same way, here's one from 1915 (click for video):

Riding a tandem tallbike is really fun and very easy! The rolling mount is surprisingly not difficult.

I'm 6'2" and my wife is quite tall as well. I'm in the process of building a tandem that is just right for us by welding together two mountain bikes. I'm excited since all other tandems I've ridden are too short.

Hi, I got here by accident...

So was this made 5 seconds before the headtube snapped off and the guy landed gracefully on his arse?

i took this for one glorious critical mass ride. it was stolen shortly thereafter.
the synch chain kept dropping, so the stoker had to do all the labor and braking.

The funny thing about that bike is that it was stolen, broken, found at the scrapyard, returned, stolen AGAIN by a scrapper, and I found it on the back of his truck but I said fuhgettaboutit because it was junk by then.

horizontal tandems, no matter how high they are off the ground, seem to be relatively easy to control with two decent riders on board (we built one with the two seats at 4 feet and 6 feet even), but when the tandem goes virtical, it would appear that the design, not the riders skill, may be the final factor concerning ridability. (or in their case, communication :P) my friends built this tandem such that the top person steers, and the bottom brakes. turns out, that doesn't work so well. they scrapped the idea after one too many injuries.

Based on my experience watching them ride that thing, I don't think it was the design, I think it was Third Circle's lack of tallbike riding experience. This vertical tandem from 1915 seems to be doing fine:
