Road Cycling - So, Aspiring racers

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
How are you guys doing with your weekly hour requirements?? Can you handle the pain??

Now, I wonder who he could be talking about.... (lets just look at the name).
I've set 10-12 hours a week for the winter (until about Feburary). Didn't get it last week because my wheel went splaying out of true arg!

Hmmm, doesn't seem like there should be much pain right now. LSD base building time. You need to build your aerobic endurance with lots of easier miles to get your body ready to do the harder work in spring. I got my time in for the last three weeks. It's a lot easier when you commute. :D This is Week 4 of 18, a light week.
FWIW,

Right now, the hardest part of conditioning is pushing away from the table. Enjoy it while you can, January cometh.
The pain of riding an indoor trainer in order to get those miles? Yeah, I'm doing alright with it so far. Thanks for checkin'. :)
Rainman, yes, fubar knows all about the base miles thing. He read my base mileage post in this forum. ;)
Velo,
How are you tailoring your indoor rides? Time? distance?
Rollers or Trainer?
I've started doing about an hour each morning on
the rollers, try to get a ride in after work
and some long miles on weekend.
Would time on trainer equate to LSD rides?
and lastly (gee I ask alot of questions don't I? )
how do you tailor your training for track riding?
Marty
The pain of intervals is teeny weeny compared to hours on a stationary bike (rollers, spinner, trainer). Lucky for me the weather isn't to bad yet. I've got to save up for some Tour De France videos and a tv to put in my "gym".
Velo, are you weight lifting?
Oh Yeah, are any of you guys lookinh around for your "racing" bike? I sure am, I'm pretty close to a decision now.
I think I'm gonna go inexpensive though (Specialized Allez Elite, 105 stuff) and use the extra smackers for fees and gear. Rather than going expensive to get a bike with Ultegra and stuff. Besides, I'm not an Ultegra level rider yet.
I just picked up some rollers that were laying around the shop, I tried them out for a few mintues, and I can see they are going to be fun, for those watching. My boss says they(the rollers) are 20 yrs old and have a bad bearing, but should hold up for me.
Rainmanp, you training to race?
lotek,
My training group and I ride indoors during the week, and outdoors during the weekends (school and work makes it that way :( ). For indoor, currently we are doing 1 hour efforts, which end up being between 25-30miles per night. We ride Cateye trainers (Ergo trainers, for some of us, are in the process of being built :) ). We'll do close to the same thing every indoor training session until the end of the month.
Trainer rides can be LSD rides. It's definitely not the best since you have to constantly push, which sometimes can turn to slightly anaerobic efforts. And, it's hard to do the real time you need (1 1/2 hours (with cool down) surely isn't that great...). But, you have to do what you can with weather/time at hand. We make up for the short week trainer work with long weekends (3-4 hours per day).
Right now, there isn't much tailoring for track riding, because we all have to get good road miles in. We try to ride the track one day a week, weather permiting, during the winter. On the trainer, shorter, more intense efforts (time trial simulation) and repeating sprint workouts (points & scratch race simulation) are good. Honestly, it's hard to do on a trainer, and in the winter. We wait until the spring to really go hard at the track. Off the bike, weights and plyometric training can help with your track riding.
fubar,
Yes, I'm lifting.
lotek & fubar,
I don't know if you've been reading all my training posts in this forum, but I'm currently discussing winter training methods. So, weights, plyos, trainer workouts, and more will be coming up if you'd like to stay tuned for them.

Velo,
Not only have I been reading em, I've got em printed
out and started to build a library of your stuff.
As I said, I appreciate hearing from someone who is
"walking the walk". Keep em coming!
BTW, I expect to see you at the Frisco Velodrome when
it reopens and ya'll need a 250 metre track! Who knows
maybe nationals or worlds will be held there!
Fubar,
How do you like the Rollers? I really like mine
and yeah, it was comical for others to watch for the
first week or two.

I'd love to come to Frisco. I'm glad to hear you're working on it, also. Did you hear that Jr. Worlds 2004, and Elite Worlds 2005 are already going to the not-yet-build L.A. velodrome? Indoor-250...nice...but why on the west coast? Don't they know it's happening here on the east? ;) Plus, we're the ones with the winter. We need the indoor track!
I'll be really excited, if I make the 2004 Worlds team, to ride in the U.S., though. It was great watching the 2001 Jr. Worlds here in T-town. Especially when the hometown girl won the last race of the last night! :D
there is a program to "adopt" boards at Frisco,
and I'm gonna do one or two. Each board gets
a name or somesuch written on it (below the varnish?)
so I'm thinking of maybe BikeForums?
I'm also gonna volunteer to help rebuild/repair,
don't know what I'm gonna do, but I figure every
little bit will help.
I am also thinking about actually getting a track bike.
They run a Trackriding 101 course and actually teach
old geezers like me how to ride. I'm beginning to see
riding in some masters (or old farts) class races, too cool.
Like I said, we do expect to see you there, riding as
both a junior and then riding full on training for
Olympics etc.

Marty,
I may buy a board myself, but I would also be up for throwing in 10 bucks or so to pay for one with BikeForums.net if you want to start a collection. It might be an opportunity for others to make a contribution even if they don't want to do a whole board themselves.

Raymond
