View Full Version : Winter's Back...
Back again. I have been afraid to say anything for fear of jinxing myself but i think it is too late. Forecast calls for lows back down around single digits. We haven't had those since early December. January was the warmest on record for here in Kansas and now it is time to pay.
The good news is that we are plowing towards March which means it won't be long until Spring. It will be so nice to be free of the 15 minute morning dressing, bike prepping ritual. I can hardly wait but for now it will be back to the freezer.

yeah.. I'm not quite ready for spring yet.. but it would be nice to not have so many articles of clothing to manage.. dress/undress time, wash time, hang to dry time all adds up.. will be nice to be able to just thro on a pair of bibs, jersey, shoes, helmet and gloves.. and go again.. but I'm not in yet the kind of shape I want to be in for spring, so I'm not hoping it ends yet... after fracturing a fibula in early November, I'm just happy to be accumulating saddle time in any conditions again 8-)

What winter.
It's in the 50's here (NYS) today - and the last little puny drop of snow will be melted by this afternoon due to the drizzley rain.
I must have had something to do with this though - I looked forward to riding in the snow - updated my pants, purchased better gloves - plus a few more things .... and .... nuthin.
What I worry about now is that any good Spring riding will pushed out further ...
I'll say it is!!
It's -26C/-15F here with a windchill factor of -37C/-35F right now.
I walked to and from the college this morning, and believe me ... it was COLD! On Sunday I did a century and it reached a lovely +10C/50F .... four days later ....

And your weather today is usually our weather in a few days--but not quite as cold! Last night it snowed, today we're expecting thunderstorms (!) and tonight down to 8 degrees F with 55 mph winds. I'm finally getting to use all that gear I got last fall.

I'm such a turd. I'm actually contemplating calling in sick because it'll be @$$ cold and WTH Friday. What's stopping me? No beer at home.
:o
It looks like I'm going to be stuck having to ride into work on Saturday. That is not going to be fun. At least the snow hasn't shown up.
Yet...
I did have a nice ice beard when I got to work today, though.

Big-time winter weather here. After hardly any snow this winter, we got 2 straight days, and more on the way. I'm going to attempt riding tomorrow. Supposed to have a low of -1 deg F!

Here in Alberta it's right around -26*C... (I believe)... unfortunately, I was dumb enough to leave home this morning without a scarf. Belgium... that was cold on the face. Fortunately, my ride to and from school is only about half a kilometer, so I didn't have to endure it too long. But even when I went on a brief ride later, the cold seemed to come right through the scarf and touqe.
But, I guess we've had this cold weather coming. I should be thankful for being spoiled rotten with the lovely weather we've been having. And hey, there's not too much snow here, so withing a week or two, the snow may be gone. But, I guess I won't complain too much if it doesn't go for a while.

Winter is definetely back.
A few inches of snow and temps in the 5F range. The high is something like 15F.
However, I bailed on my cyclocommute. Legs are having issues, need to pick up 2X4s for my bathroom remodel, and a few other reasons. OoooOoOo! Have a date with the wife tonight and need to get home earlier. That and pick up my fenders.
-8F in Minneapolis right now. I made the mistake of letting the wind at my back push me about 8 miles out of my way on the ride home last night (I think it was colder then.) Ended up taking the light rail part of the way back - it was just WAY too damn cold...

Didn't you Twin Citiesians (Minneapolis/St. Paul) love getting through that kind of commute though? Yes, it was very cold this morning and then some with us creating our own additional wind chill, but I'll be damned if it didn't get me going more than usual. I like to think that living here in these types of elements is one of the reasons for choosing to be here. I can't wait to go home today and start a fire, gather the family and talk about the day with hot chocolate all around. A good game of chess, maybe. Sounds good to me after a 30+negative wind chill ride! It's Friday too, that means I'll have to bust out the cognac again!

Um, no. Actually got an ice cream headache on the way home late last night when I turned into the wind. No real chance to acclimate to this stuff. So I stayed home today and will stoke the missus furnace with some extra wood to keep warm. ;) Hopefully, when I'm bike shopping tomorrow, the stores will be dead empty. I've got some serious coin (for me) to drop on a new 'cross rig and some goodies. :D :D :D

Yeah, I didn't have the cojones to ride today. Or yesterday.
As stated earlier, we had sunseasonably warm temps in January. We were having highs in the 60's and 70's and lows in the 20's. Today's ride was 11 F with a very stiff north wind (20 + mph). Windchills were well below zero.
I think the warmer weather hurt me because it was a pretty tough 1 hr and 45 minute ride today. Feet were starting to hurt thanks to the inferior Lake MXZ winter shoes. I just got them last month and haven't had any real cold weather until today. Long story short, these shoes blow in temps below 20 F.
I'll be going back to the insulated hiking boots and platforms if temps are like that tomorrow. Cold riding isn't bad until you get something that starts to hurt. These shoes made my feet feel pain from the cold for the first time in a couple years. Bottom line: they aren't really Winter shoes.
It's going to be a real struggle to keep going through the next week. TEmps are predicted to be well below normal and I already have a good dose of Spring fever with Spring a month away. Oh well, forward ho.
