Mountain Biking - Noisey Crank

And I'm not talking about myself. I've got an Icon crank that started making noise this weekend. I though about replacing the BB but have decided to go with an entire new crank and BB. This is for a Trek 7000. I would like to know the suggestions on what crank to get. What's the best bang for the buck? I do mostly XC riding.

Truvative is a great crank for the money. Get the ISIS splined version and buy a Race Face bottom bracket, worth the extra $$$.

Shimano XT is also a great deal, and there are many available on closeout at mail order companies throughout. Remember, you'll need a Shimano specific splined bottom bracket as well.

One of my favorite Aluminum cranks are the RaceFace LP Turbines. They're a great product from a great company. If you're a weight weenie, but the "Next LP" the one with the carbon inserts. If you're into hardcore Freeriding get the "North Shore" version.

If you want indestructible cranks, check out Profile Racing www.profileracing.com and get their chromoly cranks. These are heavy, but soooooo strong!

I'd like to keep the cost of the BB and Crank to under $200.00.

The Truvative w/bb is a good deal.

The XT is under $100, but remember you need a Shimano splined bb as well. This is for a road, but works for mtb as well: http://pricepoint.com/product405.html For $5.00 more you can get the XTR. I personally don't like the silver cranks, black chainring combo, but the price is definately good!

I'm not crazy about the Prodigy line from RaceFace, but I've heard good things about them. Plus, they also come in Red. And everyone know, red is always faster!

Make sure that your new cranks come with a "one-key release" crank bolt so you won't need another two crank pullers.

Removing and replaceing cranks/bb isn't too hard, just make sure your new bb is the same thread as your old one, and ask to verify your new vs old spindle width won't affect your chainline.

I'm in Orlando. I rode the Paisley Trail in the Ocala National Forest last weekend. A little warm for my liking but a nice trail. I'll do it again once the weather shifts a little.

Let me know where you are and a ride sounds good. I'm mostly a roadie but just starting to get into the mountain bike side.

I'm down in Sarasota. The trails in Ocala Nat'l Forest are a bit too tame for my liking. I prefer hitting Santos Trail in Belleview, Razorback or Hard Rock in Ocala, Carter Road in Mulberry, of Alafia River St. Park in ????, I guess SE Brandon is closest. I think the closest actaul town is called "Picnic", but it doesn't appear on any maps (it's that small).

I too have a road bike, but I consider myself a mtn biker who also road rides, not the other way around.

Perhaps we could hook-up at Carter Road just west of Lakeland. Nice area, lots of trees, and the trails goes around a series of lakes. It used to be an old Phosphate Mine that is now County Propery and there is a long loop that goes all around. There are small side loops that run along these "fingers of land" that go into the larger lake. Varying skill level, but beginner/intermediate riders can skip them because they are short loops or out-n-backs, so you can wait until the advanced riders come back. I take my "active" 62 father-in-law there and we have a lot of fun riding together.
