Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Cane Creek wheels in QBP!

Skimming through the 06 Quality catalog yesterday I noticed some new pictures of fancy track wheels: the Cane Creek Volos! Availible as clincher or tubular, at your lbs. I wish I had a bike that warrented these.

Which is not in the catalog, but that can probably be order directly from CC.

Is there a way to just purchase a rear hub?

they are good! we had a thread about them a month or two ago. i dont think you can buy just the hub.

I've emailed CC about these things.


I have 3 questions concerning these wheels:

1. Is the sidewall on the escape (clincher version) machined? If so can it not be machined?

2. What is the MSRP. My local bike store generally prices at about 150% his cost, so how much can I expect to spend?

3. Is there any possible way to purchase the hubs alone? I read the FAQ's concerning the proprietary drilling of the rim, but I have had some trouble with my velocity rims.

Thanks for the e-mail. The rims are machined (only option at this time), MSRP for black rims, $450.00, sterling silver rims $475.00, they are sold as complete wheels no hubs separately.

John at business cycles had a set of those when I was down there, they look pretty awesome. He said they're cheaper than the mavics, and that he might start recomending them to people instead of the mavic wheel.

Another note- QBP endorses this wheel for use on the street!

Cane Creek wheels ... are bit of a PITA to work on ... I have a set on my MTB (same hub design) I have watched my mechanic friend fuss (he was pretty effin' frustrated, might have just been him) with the plastic cover that gives you access to the nipples which are on the hub not the rim. Otherwise I love mine, strong, bearings are really smooth and the flanges are nice ... oh and they come with a spoke wrench *specifically* designed for the wheelset

if i recall correctly he has them on the site too.

that rear hub freaks me the **** out. not in a bad way though.

i have a rear wheel built with similar design (the big weird brass-knuckles looking flanges are only on drive side). great, great, great.

That looks like the hub Marcus (Yojimbo's) has on his Kilfoy. I'm interested as well.

"cronos" or something to that effect? i purchased the set blindly from ebay a long time back (for only $200!) the seller told me that the company is small and hand makes road hubs for custom builds, and this was the only set that the company made that was track specific. a one-off sort of thing, perhaps prototype. i haven't been able to research them any further, but they are totally amazing. straight pull bladed spokes to 24 hole deep v elite pro tubulars. for as beefy as they look, they are amazingly light and sprinty.

...and the standard shop nipple wrench won't fit on these. I'm still considering getting a pair because they rock.

its my understanding that they are pretty maintenance-free, so with proper care you won't be tuning up too much.

Cronos is the pre-Cane Creek design of the same wheels. Cane Creek bought the design from Cronos back in the day.

In that old thread, wasn't the conclusion or sleuthing that the person who made the Cronos hired or bought by Cane Creek and thus that became the Volos?
