I like my girlfriend better when she is a sweatball.

Thor,
No doubt you are correct. Also I forwarded this thread to my daughter, at Arizona State University. Here was her response:

"i'm fine with riding at night, and with riding the bus alone. i never said anything about being afraid of either of those."

So much for a Dad's worrying!

Heh. This whole thread title made me giggle, sorry pops. I'm a 26-y.o. chickie living in somewhat-gentrifying-yet-somehow-my-car-still-gets-broken-into-for-fun DC, and I mostly worry about getting hit by a car when jaywalking (much more into traffic rules on the bike, go figure), and about sketchy dudes when i'm locking up my precious two-wheeler outside of a non-work location (luckily, the gummint pays for some very good security guards). what if they break her and take her innocence, and i never see her again? how will i wreak my terrible revenge?

etc.

Your title made for some extreem responses, though. I wouldn't make it a gender thing. I would make it a bikes-are-cool-unless-you're-trying-to-haul-furniture* thing. Group hug.

*Though I've seen some pretty wild bike skillz involving Germans and Ikea furniture.

Back when I was a young rooster in my 20s, I used to live in Arlington, VA, and I cycled regularly all around DC, Arlington, and Alexandria. I loved cycling those areas, but boy did I ride a crappy bike.
