It seems that every since I started shopping, my budget has grown exponentially each week. I just spoke to the LBS that I am dealing with, and he offered me something that I can't afford buy I am curious about anyway. He has a couple large frame Tomac Buckshot's that he can deal on. Like really really deal on. Tell me about this bike. I can't seem to find much on the Manitou Mars Comp Coil Fork. I do know it has the LX frontD and shifters and the XT rearD.

I am curious as to how you think this bike rides. It is hundreds of dollars (ok maybe double) what I can really afford. But, what is money good for other then to spend right? Ramen noodles anyone?

Tomac makes very good bikes and the components will work just fine. the oly problem I would have with that bike is the fork. If you are looking for a trail/xc bike it should work for you. Other wise, if you are thinking that you might ride aggressively then I would say you should upgrade to a Marzocchi fork. They handle hard riding much better then Manitous.

The only other comment I would add. (I didn't read the article, so if I repeat, excuse me.)

This design is a copy of the Horst link (the design that Specialized holds the patents on), except that the Tomac has the pivot on the seatstay, not the chainstay. That's how they avoid licensing the design and paying out money.

It's all good and well, but this pivot results in "brake jack". While descending, and you apply the rear brake, the suspension will stiffen and cause the seat to go up a couple of inches.

In reality, it's not that big of a deal, unless you ride where there are a lot of fireroad descents. You will hardly notice this on technical singletrack!

I think the Tomac is a sweet ride, but I also think (remember, just my opinion) that there are better bikes for the money!

I don't remember what your budget was, but if you want a similar design for a good deal from a sweet manufacturer, check this bike out! Yeti Kokopelli http://www.supergo.com/itemdisplay.asp?compflag=0&parentid=20543&company=Yeti&secid=7559&subid=7
