Why is it, that we celebrate the athletic excellence of Olympians, by sitting on the couch all day and eating chips for 2 straight weeks?

Just wondering...

Nah, I think the Olympic Games started out more as a means to give 'bread and circuses' to the masses rather than to encourage physical activities.

^What she said. Plus, I'm gonna eat some chocolate peanut butter(crunchy) instead of chips. Plus, um, I haven't actually watched any of the winter games, yet.:o

Actually, I beleive the Greeks started the Olympic games to keep their army in fighting shape. Now they're a platform that has a unrivaled (for it's participating sports) audience.

It's amazing to watch, but I'm going to make sure I use all that inspiration and get out for a ride today.

I honour the olympians by sitting on the couch and taking steroids for 2 weeks.

Really? Where'd you read that? I'm not being sarcastic here... it's just that I remember reading that they originated as a religious festival of sorts, to honor the Gods (primarily Zeus) but I could be wrong. Such a celebration, with the most distinguished Greek 'athletes' as participants, sounded like entertainment of the masses and a reason to indulge to me.

Watching the winter olympics indoors during the winter isn't that ironic. Watching the TdF indoors during the summer is ironic.

The way I remember it, the Greeks were at the forefront of specialization, and discovered one or two, full-time, well trained soldiers could easily take out a dozen, irregular, miltia-style troops. This discovery led to the development of standing armys thoughout the Mediterranean.

Now to keep ready, there was a lot of training and discipline in the army to keep up a routine to be ready, but a competition in those military exercises between the soldiers created an extra incentive to be ready in a more effective way. They organized a festival, offered prizes, and invited audiences to view the events. This only increased further, the motovation of the soldiers.

It's a pretty clever way to increase the fitness level of the army though personal motovation that only benefits the people they were protecting through a fitter army.
