I just started commuting on my fixed gear(third day) and I have noticed a slight rattle coming from the chainring area. Aren't fixies silent? Any idea what the problem might be? ....Maybe to wide a chain.

is your chainline straight? chain lubed? correct chain tension?

The chainline is straight(I eyeballed it), the chain is lubed and yes the chain seems to be correctly tensioned.

So, you think, its not the chain width is the chain quality?

I would think so..cos my chain line was strait when I took out the older chain.....

check the chainring bolts. even if theyre tight, they might make noise as they "settle in" for up to a week.

Yeah, I have some noise with my newly assembled drivetrain.
Promax/Phil wood cog&bb/Sugino 75/Izumi chain.
Not chainline noise, just noise.
I'm hoping it'll go away.

But I might try reinstalling the chainring, per muftek's advice.

its okay for your drivetrain to make some noise. the chain quality def has something to do with it. i have a straight chainline w/sugino rds, surly hub and cog with a sram pc -1 chain. ive recently lubed and tightened all my chainring bolts too. it makes some noise, but i dont fret. neither should you.

A little noise is nothing to worry about. My chain makes a little noise, and its a great, solid chain, and my chainline is straight as an arrow. Some of them just work like that. Don't sweat it.

Tonight, some guy on a geared bike was rattling himself down the street going the other way on the other side. His drivechain noise was so loud, it drowned mine out.
