I have a Campy Record 8 drivetrain and need to replace the chain. The previous one was a SRAM PC 68 and am replacing it with the Campy 8/9 sp. chain.
The Campy chain out of the box is 3-4 links longer than the old chain. Should I trim 3-4 links off the Campy chain before installing or is it ok to leave it at the out-of-the-box length?

Shorten it. Most chains need to be shortened out of the box.

Be certain that is is really 3-4 links longer. Used chains "stretch" (a technical misnomer but useful for discussion purposes) and will be slightly longer than a new chain with the same number of links. A "stretch" of 3 or 4 links is not likely but 1 or 2 is possible depending on the age and abuse the old chain had endured. It might be worth the aggravation to count links in the old chain and cut the new chain to match.

Send me all the extra links so I can sell them on ebay in 5 years for a few hundred. I'll cut you in on half.
