View Full Version : Hands and rigid forks?

Does anyone else have problems with their hands when riding with a rigid fork for moderate periods of time?
I ask because I was riding in town today for like 2 hours, and my hands were hurting a lot, it was like when I gripped the bars my knuckles got locked into that position and when I straightened my hand out it hurt to do it.. And riding over rocks make it even worse, but not if I gripped the bars harder.
It seems like it's not as bad with my mountain bike, but that bike sucks and I don't want to ride it.
Could it be the handlebars or grips or something? Or maybe I squeeze the grips too hard, or whatever? Am I just being a ***** and need to suck it up?

I get that on occasion. I actually got it last night, but it was from rock climbing, not biking.

Yeah, I use to get that sometimes, back when I was running Kink Omega grips. They are SUPER thin grips, so after those were worn out, I got Primo Martinez grips. They are HUGE, that seemed to help, because I have got one, maybe two since then.

Try those. Great cushioning. Large outside diameter too.

my hands seem to lock up after a good session...just rest for a few minutes and you'll be fine.

Winter street sessions make it 10X worse.

I ride a mtb rigid fork.
I use firmer, smaller diameter grips. ODI Ruffian lock-ons.
The cushier the grips, the more you have to clench your hands =strain.
My take on it anyway.
You should take an anti-inflammatory (Tylenol, Advil, Aleve, etc). You can even take it before you go riding, and it will help prevent it.

Well.. maybe when I'm like 60 and I need it so my arthritis doesn't act up I will.. it's not that bad though, I'm willing to get new grips or bars but not take pills every time I go ride.
Thanks for the suggestions, I'll look for some new grips. I have Odyssey Adam Banton grips on there now, fairly thick and not very padded. I like the feel of them a lot, but if I can find some that feel good without being squishy and still don't make my hands hurt after long rides that'll be good. I'll probably try those ODI ruffians

what is everyone talking about grips?
well if were talking about grips...
the Primo V's and Odyssey Teams and ODI Longnecks (i think thats what there called) are the best...no exceptions.

I don't know about the Primos, and I can definitely say that the Longnecks are way better than the Odyssey Teams that I used to run.
I don't know what the hell he was thinking when he suggested Lock-On grips, though. used to run those stupid things back in the day. They sucked. They were heavier, they cost more, they didn't save all that much time in taking on and off, and they wore through way faster.

I've always liked soft, "grippy" grips. Takes less clamping force from my hands to hang on.
I hate small diameter grips. Despise them.
Hate flanges too.
As far as wearing out grips...so what, they're all cheap too me.

Longnecks are soft and grippy. And they aren't exactly "small diameter"; they're the thickest grips I've ever run. And flanges? Cut them off if you don't like them.

Primo Martinez grips are huge, I love them. Biggest grips i've ever seen.

Honestly, i have like 5 freinds (including myself) that have the Primo V-grips, they are amazing, there soft after 1 day of good riding and they never blister up your hands...
and there the perfect thickness. The only trouble i have had with them is the fact that the colored ones wear faster...so get black

I know, they're sweet. :D I will never ride another grip again. The first day you ride them, they seem super weird, but after that you'll never go back. I stocked up on them, I have 5 pairs in my room right now. :p

Lock on grips are annoying to me, whenever i ride someones bike that has them i find myself accidently grabing the lock on part and it hurts/cuts me(on the bolt part)
i think its a good idea and all but they could use some flanges...
Alot of people by lock ons because they DON'T have flanges. Flanges look corny to me.

I like the look of flanges.. they're also just kind of nice to have, dunno why exactly

Once again, you avoid addressing the actual issue at hand with a feeble attempt at putting me down.
I was considering not even posting it because you would say something like that.

And, sadly, you decided to post and make yourself look like a fool once again.
I have big hands and I use Kink Omegas, which are great but wear out too fast, I'm using Gary Young's now and hopefully they'll last a bit longer. Grips are a hugely personal thing.
is it like throttle grip(moto) ive got odyssey teams they are gay and soon as you get sweaty hands its gets worse going to get some fly rubens
