Hi,

I am switching my stem and handlebars to something lighter - I've got the torque specs and feel comfortable there. The bike has Ultegra STI 10 speed shifters/brake levers - after removing the tape and peeling back the hoods I see that an aluminum clamp is attaching/holding the shifters to the bar. What I can't see is how is this clamp loosened or tightened. Any tips? Also when attaching the shifters to the new bar, any tightening guidance to make sure I don't under/over tighten? I looked at the Shimano site - didn't see anything (not that it's not there). Any links to diagrams?

peel back the outside edge of the hoods, you should see a hex bolt. at least that is the way they were on a pair of my STIs.

If you pull away the top edge of the hood on the outer side of the brifter you will see a little groove. That groove leads to a 5mm allen screw that tightens/loosens the handlebar clamp. Reinstall them just tightly enough that they won't move during normal riding. If you crash you want them to give a little so that they'll rotate on the bar rather than breaking.

I initially did this with my 10s brifters but then I found that I was pulling them round on steep climbs. Now I just tighten them up fully. Just have to remember to grab the tops when I'm about to crash!!!

The allen bolt is a great design, I think, though. It's very well hidden (OP found this out well!) and easy to adjust even with standard L-shaped allen keys.
