Bicycle Mechanics - 29'er tires that won't go flat

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I have owned a fisher 29'er for the last 6 months. I ride the Bike to work and back. However it seems that I am fixing a flat every other day. I bought strips to put in the tire, ride mostly on roads. I don't think that these tubes should go flat this often. Any idea on getting fewer flats? tire suggetions, etc?

make sure you check inside your tire after a flat to make sure you are pulling out whatever caused it... other thing is to make sure your rim strips are in good shape and there aren't any bits of metal on your wheels that are causing the flat.
if those two fail, i suggest Stans No Tubes, or an alternative thereof.

For the same reason that socks disappear from the dryer, flat tires seem to come in spurts, even if you do everything properly (clean out inside of tire, avoid pinching tube, etc.) Just keep fixing them and deal.
The best way to avoid flats in my experience is to keep them properly inflated (using a gauge, if you dont have one).

What's causing the flats?

alot of times(well in my life time) the nipple/air vavle leaks air, which lowers the air pressure, and somthing then punctures it because it was low. So try checking for leaks

Flats are caused by punctures. Multiple times have been glass or stickers from plants. I have had one pinch flat, been careful about air pressure since. Do Armidilo tires help prevent punture flats?
thanks for the help and comments

I use Continental Ultra Gatorskin tires with Michelin Air Stop tubes exclusively and have not had one flat since converting to Contis.

Slime. Slime has saved my ass, so many times. I never carry a spare tube due to the bus lines normally run where I bike, but it's such a handy item to carry around with you.

thanks for the help and commentsYes, the kevlar-belted tyres are more puncture-resistant, but nothing can resist glass or goat-heads that get pounded into the tyre on every revolution over and over again. Tyre savers are the answer, scrapes off the glass or goat-head on a single revolution...
