Ello,

After taking the fork off my bike for service and notice a ring in my headset was cracked all the way through... What i want to know is, is this a standard little ring, I could pick up some where, or am I going to have to put on a new headset? The ring is the one in the pic, and is the ring that directly touches the steerer tube.

Also, just wondering, what kind of headset do I have? I don't mean brand, I mean like a zerostack and what not. Is it possible to put a regular (w/ cups exposed) on here? Or would I have to run one with the cups recessed into the headtube?

Thanks guys!
Matt

Looks like it serves more like a bushing than anything else. I wouldn't worry about it. A lot of bushings have slits and work very well.

did you get your HS figured out yet? it was hard to tell in the pic, but isn't the split supposed to be there to act as a wedge between the the bearing race and steer tube??

or was it a crack in the bearing?

it kind of looked like an internal HS or integrated? I don't think you can run a conventional HS

Thanks for the info! No, the crack wasn't in the bearing, it is in the "shim" between the steertube and the bearings. I just wanted to know if it was okay to run w/ it because when I overhauled my headset in the past, I never noticed it.

Is the piece that has the split wedge in profile? if so then it is the expander that seat the steerer tube firmly to the bearing.

Ditto what the Good Reverend said..Looks to me also like the compression ring...Can't run anything but a integrated headset here.

yea its fine to run as is, it will still put pressure where necessary.
Looks like you are running a zero stack, but its hard to tell. Are the bearings pressed directly into the frame? If so, its an integrated. If there are cups that are pressed into the frame, and the bearings pressed into the cups, its zero stack

...OOps I stand corrrected. Zero Stack it is. Not quite the same as "integrated". Zero Stack has cups pressed in but do not like regular ahead-type headsets w/ external cups.

Yeah, it just makes it so it sits firmly. So if it is split, is it still okay? Or am I going to have to start looking for a new headset? hmm, a new headset :D

Ohh darn :p

Yeah, there are cups pressed into the headtube, then caged bearing that sit on them. So it is a zerostack?

Yes ,its a zerostack. To answer mx, yes integrated is internal tho not all designs have cups that press in. Some inernal(integrated) hs bearings slip into a machined "cup" in the headtube material itself.

that's not what i meant. isn't another name for zero stack ---internal?? i know that integrated has no cups. so can't you define the major players as: integrated, internal, and traditional? i thought zero stack was more like a moniker from a particular company. like velcro is synonomous with hook and loop fastner.

It's not cracked, it's made like that. Your headset would never tighten properly without it.

Depends on how long you want to split that hair :). Headsets either have internal bearing cups (pressed or machined) or external. Within the category of internal cup headsets there are several proprietary designs other than what we've disussed here. See below...

Lyrics game:(no Googling)--"If I ruled the world, imagine that...
I'd free all my sons, I love em em baby.
Black diamonds and pearls...Could it be, if you could be mine we'd both shine."

BTW, mx...What's the Jeapordy Question to this answer?

For a brand new HS, name the song title and artist of the following lyrics:
