All right, I've got about 6 weeks before my first race (women's collegiate). I'm not really competitive, just want to give it a try. Right now I'm riding this old beater bike from the 80s. I might have a new bike as soon as next week (Trek 1500). I'm thinking about trying track every Saturday to help build me up, I go to the gym, I ride a few days a week (I wish more, but I'm so busy). I have a heart rate monitor. So, I seem to have all the resources and tools, just wondering what I do with all this? I guess what I'm asking is, what should I work on as a beginner?

work on your skills riding in a group, and spend as much time on the bike as possible. don't worry about miles. just time.

what kind of race, btw?

Lots of books, lots of trainers (for a price), Racing teams (male, female, mixed?). The LA Wheelmen and the OC wheelmen have fast/racing subsets to hang out with and ask for advice. Join the USCF or what ever it is called now. Many LBSs have teams connected with them. Ask. Any one advisor may have a bias. Get enough different ideas and your path will become clear. Have fun.
