my bike has a shimano Acera rear deralleur. the first one i had broke off so i got a new one and now its broken again. should i upgrade or stay with the Acera.

just pedalling up a hill and it just jammed and just snapped off

My Acera RD corroded badly after a couple of months. My XT still looks like new after a year.

My son's Acera der is 3 years old and completely abused. It stills shift perfect. I bought the bike for him when he was 11. As we all know young kids don't believe in maintenance. It really sounds like improper set up or abuse. Derailleurs just don't snap in half on their own.

Maybe you've just been unlucky. I had an Altus rear mech (one below Acera) for 8 years without any problems. I even took it out on a crash and it still shifted perfectly. Maybe standards at Shimano have dropped but I certainly have no complaints about any of their low end stuff from the mid-nineties.

It really sounds like improper set up or abuse. Derailleurs just don't snap in half on their own.

Not often, but they do. I had an Ultegra RD snap while I was climbing a hill in the small chain ring and 3d largest cog. No reason. No warning. It just snapped and flipped up into the spokes. It made a mess of the wheel. I fixed the wheel but the derailleur was toast.

That happend to my friend on his cyclocross bike, him and I were jamming it up a hill
and he shifted to the sounds of it breaking in half, lbs mechanic said that his derailer hanger was bent so it made the derailer go into the spokes

I agree with Tim that derailleurs don't snap in half on their own. Something gets drawn into the mechanism and causes the damage. It could be a stick, pebble or a piece of wire but it's almost always something. You may not find the culprit but you can be pretty sure it was something.
I had a nearly new Ultegra 9-speed rear derailleur completely destroyed by a piece of wire sucked in by the chain but the cause was a foreign object, not failure for no apparent reason.
