Anybody know anything about airsoft guns? I want to get a pistol, to shoot around......
Criteria: (in descending order of importance to me.)
-cheap
-180+fps
-small
-reliable
-accurate
And, has anybody used any of the littl p99's on ebay? like $10 shipped? What's wrong with them?
I'm trying to make some, too, but you don't want to know what that involves, like for instance, pumping sprite bottles full of high pressure air....

Airsoft guns are so fun! A friend of mine brought one along when a group of us went camping. We'd have competitions to see who could withstand being shot the most times (those little buggers sting!).
I bought a $15 spring powered pistol from walmart along with a tub of 6000 bb's. After just a couple of weeks, a plastic part (not sure what else to call it) broke inside. I tried super glueing it back together but there is a lot of stress on this piece of plastic when the gun fires, so it keeps breaking. Now i'm stuck with about 5000 bb's and no gun :(
I don't know anything about the gun you mentioned. There are a couple of different types of airsoft guns you can choose from. There are the inexpensive spring powered ones that need to be cocked again after every shot, or you can get one with a little electric motor that reloads the gun automatically. They tend to be slightly more expensive. I opted for a spring powered one because it would have less parts to break (obviously that didn't work). Basically, if you want a gun that will work for a long time, spend a little more money and don't get a p.o.s. walmart gun.
If you want a cheap gun for just recreational shooting, go for a spring powered pistol of any kind. I think most guns are over 180 fps. Mine was like 230 or 270 I think. And I don't think any of them are very accurate. The wind can catch the bb's pretty well if you're shooting over any kind of distance.

The rule with airsoft guns is the same as the rule for anything else, you get what you pay for. But still, any of them can break very easily. About accuracy, just stick with the heaviest pellets and that will stabilise there flight path as well as possible until they loose all potency at about 25 feet.
My recomendation is bb guns and/or paintball guns. Neither will break easily like airsoft, and if you want to shoot something at your friends, paintball guns are great.
About pumping up pop bottles. I've been there and done that. You would do much better to start experimenting with piping.

So you experiment too, eh? I wrap bottles in fiberglass tape, and get much higher pressures. I'll try piping soon, too.
I already do paintball, just airsoft is cheaper.....
Oooh airsoft is fun. The guns i have are a pistol, shotgun, mini mp5, semi desert eagle, super 9 sniper and thats it. Minis suck, my jammed and broke.
I have a HFC P99 pistol. Its plastic but it works well. Somehow the clip wont stay in after like 3 months..
My friend had a HFC M9 which held 13 rounds but its full size. Its like 19 bucks.
I think you might like the UHC P9...its pretty small but is 200fps with 19 rounds for 14+ dollors.
Look for a 357 magnum revolver. 6 shots with replacable shells.

If you are just looking for target practice, get a 30 dollar 760 pumpmaster, oil it occasionaly, and it will last for years. But thats no good for shooting your friends obviously. In my experience, those cock the slide every shot airsoft guns are of inconsistent quality, and none will last too long. Just the same, they are always great fun, and at 10-25 bucks, its just about irrelivant how long they last.

Hey well note that cheap is tops. I just want something that flings a bb with reasonable reliability--I like to sneak up close to people. In paintball too, even though my gun is pretty accurate.
What paintball gun did you have?

Well, it be a Spyder Sonix, not the brand-new model, but the one before that. And I heavily altered it, with a few upgrades. New knockout 14" barrel, I did a serious trigger job, as in shortened and lightened the trigger pull, new rubber grips, and, latest and coolest, I made a delrin cocking bolt, which makes it really smooth and quick.
I try and make the best use of cheap stuff, since pball can get *shock horror* almost as expensive as riding a bike if you're not careful!!!
So I use inexpensive paintballs, and do my own upgrades, and avoid wasteful tactics. Like getting pinned down one-on-one. As a result, I got good at one-on-one type tactics, and usually cream people. Even with a pump up on semi's. That's a fun scary challenge.

I'll just buy a $5-$20 one somewhere and see if it blows up.
I can make a sniper rifle with my compressed air thing----michigander, do you know anything about air pressure regulators? 90psi is plenty to send a pellet flying, but a 90psi tank doesn't last long. I can easily make a tank that will take 200+psi, but need to regulate that pressure down to a constant 80-100psi.
That's tough for a home project.

How about this? I melted the bottom caps to make a rounded profile, and then wrapped it, cap is presta valve reinforced with metal washer. This one's at about 150 psi right now. Could go to 200+, but I like 150 just fine right now.
150 is plenty to send a pellet off at 300+fps. I'm going to make an airsoft sniper rifle.
