I use Salsa 144x18th chainrings, because they are cheap, nice and round, US made, and perform just as well as the Sugino 75 I had that cost twice as much. No experience with any other brands.

I also have the Salsa 144 1/8 ring. Haven't used it yet but it seems like a good deal for the money.

I have a TA 1/8" ring that isn't even close to round.
I'm using it on sugino 75's and tried all kinds of centering, no luck.
been meaning to get a new one... where is the best place to get the salsa rings?

I think ben's cycle has them for around $30.

I got mine from spicercycles. I don't think they are on the website but give Gene a call and he should be able to hook you up. I think I paid around 30 bucks.

Haven't seen one, I know that Gebhardt make a 41, which is the smallest I've definitely seen.

I own a mix of Sugino 75, Campy, Suntour Superbe and Shimano chainrings and frankly I can't tell them apart when I'm riding them (all pista, 1/8"). They're all lasting, though I have to say the Campy and the older Shimano track rings are just wonderful beefy.

What I want to know is why 144 became standard instead of 151.

I'd imagine the BCD is too big to have that small a chainring. Campy 135 BCD can fit 39t
as its smallest, Shimano 130 BCD can take 38t as its smallest, it follows that 144bcd can't fit
anything smaller than 41t.

Hmm - 41 might work too. I'm running 46 right now, and I think that's the smallest that I've seen. I have 42 on my other set of cranks, but there don't seem to be many other options for the 144mm BCD...

I've used:

* TA 1/8" Track - completely out of round - avoid at all costs even though the finish looks gorgeous
* Shimano D-Ace track 1/8" - Older blue/grey colour. Well machined, beefy, but don't like the colour. Round enough but not that perfect...chain tension still goes slightly tight/loose when cranks turn.
* Campy Record 1/8 track - current campy track ring. Perfect roundness, really easy to get chain tension dialled in. Bit disappointed with the slightly unfinished bits on the inside of the ring which look flakey and cheap, espy as this COSTS.
* Sugino Mighty Comp - cheaper option, old style double ring w/ cutouts. I think these old style rings look great. Obviously not as much machining has gone into it (eg inner side isn't bevelled near teeth) but is perfectly round and really, really smooth. Has unusual 'W' shaped teeth profile.
* Another old-style 48T 1/8" with cutaways that I got used - don't know the make just has a symbol like a dash with two vertical lines ie:

This is also really smooth and round. Does anyone know what make this is?? its 144bcd and 1/8".

13.) custom Boone Ti 48T 144 bcd chainring. Love it. Beautiful, round and hasn't shown the least bit of wear yet. Perfect in every way. Also got a pair of new Campy Pista 48T/49T chainrings. Can't say much about them except they seem to do well as "things that sit in the trunk of your car and collect dust."

Sugino 75 49T- It seemed round for the week that I used it. Now it sits in a box.
Blackspire 45T- They only come in 3/32. Mine is a little off-round but nothing that affects my riding. It has held up really well over time. The teeth barely show any wear after a few months of steady riding. Also, the black ring looks really cool on silver cranks- Very industrial.

I have Sugino M Type, Sugino Zen, Suntour Superbe and FSA 1/8" rings. All have been fine. The only bad experience I have had was a TA I bought and returned because it wasn't even close to round.

They are other possibilities - I have an exotics like old Polish Campy record knock-off Walia and perfectly round ones coming from current make, old style Gipiemme road cranks. They can be had for cheap cranks included (very similar in form to Campy Record Track except for the provision for the second ring). They are pinned, not ramped and come in 41-43T (small) and 51-53T big ring.

I have 3 Boone cogs. No problem with wear. Note as far as I know he does not make a threaded cog. He'll make a splinded cog for a freewheel or a drilled cog (the same as a brake disc) for fixed.

eh, i dont know, i dont think it'll make much of a difference, but should you wear them out (badly hopping curbs?) ask for the 1/8ths...or go with a 3/32" chainline since HE says its the best way to go.

i have some zens (48, 49), FSAs (46, 48) and sugino 75s (48,49).

one of the zens got a little bit whacked during a lockup once and i think the ring warped. they seem really fragile. i've been careful with the other one i have. as long as they're unwarped, they ride amazingly smoothly.

i've had really good experiences with the sugino 75s. round, hefty, smooth (though noticably not as smooth as a zen).

the FSA's just arrived today, but i'll be riding them for most of the week. i'll elaborate on them later in the week. they feel pretty beefy.

Boone Ti chainrings, cassette cogs, and bolt-on cogs for disc hubs are the creme de la creme of componentry in the SS MTB realm, where stuff gets stomped on with liberal force and X-treme crank lengths. I'd bet those things hold up until judgement day.

those fsa chainrings are hott. too bad fsa's crankset is The Fugly.

seems like several people have had bad experiences with TA Competition chainrings.

I have a 1/8 44 on my bike as we speak. I did get it thru Norco and a quick perusal of last years catalogue lists all sizes in 1/8 and 3/32. I guess they decided it was cheaper to just make one standard.

Maybe when summer comes I'll ride the stock 49t chainring but for now I'm in 45/16 shape. Oh and if it matters Im running a 14t and 16t DA cog and some chromed KMC bmx chain we had a stack of laying around the shop.

75 chainrings are the bomb. stiff, smooth, durable, and perfectly round. the guys at my lbs said that i'd probably never have to replace it.

i'm sort of intrigued by the zen's alleged whisper quiet smooth running. maybe when i have $100 to blow i'll pick one up.

OK, first to the two guys who posted they were rockin' Boone chainrings in 144BCD, dude, how can I be down? :rolleyes: So hot, please send me a photo, I used to run a 21T rear Boone cog and ho&y sh&t they're jewelry.

Second, I am seeking a replacement for a 47T Sugino 75 black chainring. It's in great condition but I actually want a larger chainring 51T and keep my Phil Wood 19T cog. The gear ratio was my introduction into street riding and the rollers --- have since built up the form and can go larger gear inches.

Is the Zen Racing chainring really worth its current MSRP of $150+!? If I'm going to spend over $100, I would pass the $110 Sugino 75 chainring and go for gold, but seriously, $150?! Why?!

i have the zen. i can't say much about the cost and whether its worth it, but i love it and have had no problems with the three years/thousands of miles that i have been using it.

just keep the zen, and change the cog. i know you may love that phil cog, but its probably worn out enough that you should change it anyway. also, replace the chain at the same time.

I am using an old Sugino 75s. I got it used cheap. I don't race or nothing, so I am good with rings with some blemish. (But I wouldn't buy bashed or bent ones tho.)

Hey, I just remembered Candy Crank's chainrings. I am a little weird out by the alloy tho. 5083, it's an anti-corrosion marine purpose alloy. Looks good from specs, but never heard people using it for chainrings. Anyone? (It's got 130 and 144)
