Touring - heavy load on rack w/o braze ons?

So I have a bike with rear eyelets, but no braze-ons. I'd like to get a rack rated to hold at least 50#. If I did so, I'd probably use p-clamps to hold them to the seatstays. Would the weakness of the p-clamps cancel out the high weight rating for those racks? Should I just get an old man mountain rack? Are there any other rear racks that do not require braze ons (or that p-clamps would work especially well with?)

(ps - I've done multiple searches on the topic - I know it's been covered relatively well, but none of the threads addressed how clamps instead of braze-ons affect the usability of fully loaded racks).

I can think of any of a billion dead-nuts ways of attaching a rack that is missing the upper braze-ons. In fact my bike had the correct attachment points, and it was really nasty getitng them to fit. I can imagine any number of home made solutions that would have been more elegant, which reminds me.... In fact if you look at the 10 dollar gizmo that OMM is selling for those without BOs or Cantis, it is hardly a masterpiece of engineering. But crossectionally it probably has more on the go than most rack bolts.

like this: http://www.jandd.com/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=FCLAMP , only you can get them at hardware stores for cheaper. mostly i just don't want to drop $30 or more extra on a rack to make sure it doesn't break under 10 or 20 extra pounds, and then have that investment canceled out by the fact that i don't have secure braze ons.

I'll let you know tomorow, when I get my Nitto Rear Rear Rack. I plan on mounting it on my Guerciotti race bike. Tubus makes some little brackets that attach the bottom of the rack to the quick release skewer .
