Bicycle Mechanics - Trek Headset

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Have an older Trek 800 Sport. The balls in the lower headset bearing show some wear. The headset model is a Victor VP-H992W (It's 1 1/8" threaded ). Can I replace this headst with Ritchey or Odeyssey or any of the other 1 1/8" threaded heasets that I see on EBAY or on the biike supply websites? Any size issues I should look out for? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Any 1-1/8" threaded headset will work but the "stack height" has to be short enough to work with your current steerer length. If the stack height is too great, you won't be able to thread the top race and lock nut on properly. If the stack height is shorter, thin spacers will take up the extra steerer length.
