so I did a practice crit today with my team. some guys from duke and unc came out, and we had a grand ol time.

I ended up getting 5th...out of 5. there was probably 20 or so people at the start. here's how it went down, A's and B's werent allowed to attack until the first 30 minutes were up, cause thats when the C's were racing. I bridged up to a few C breaks, and sat in, and when they sprinted, I went back to the pack. so there was probably 15 or so people in the race then. Then someone broke away, and got a pretty good gap. I bridged up, and then there was a breakaway with like 5 people, myself included. there was a cat 2 sprinter, another guy who should be a cat 2 sprinter, and a guy who is an overall beast, who also should be cat 2, but its only his second year riding. then there was a duke guy, who was probably about as strong as myself. so I was kinda screwed. I just tried to stay on, which I did fine. we stayed away for the rest of the race, however, it wasnt till the end that I realized that after the gap got to like 20 seconds, everyone else dropped out. I didnt contest the sprint cause I was dead tired, and I got gapped about 1 yards before the sprint got started. so I got 5th. out of 5. I wasnt too happy, but I'm glad I stayed with a bunch of A's...I still have some training to do, namely 20 or so second intervals, cause that seems to be a weak spot for me. a good time was had by all

oh, and BTW, I finally got to use my michelin pro lights. they are the most awesome tires ever. I got them right before I broke my wrist, so I really only got to ride them once, in a not-so technical race. they hung on like glue, though, and rode really nice. highly recommended.

Keep going to the practice crits. Not only are they good fun, they're extremely good training. Our team just had one tonight actually. The intensity does wonders for your performance in actual races. I raced my first crit a few weeks ago (in Bs) , and I won =). It was all because of the 2x week crit practices.

yeah, practice crits are probably one of the best training tools out there. You get so amped up with the adrenaline that you don't even realize you're doing intervals and sprints! :)

"Never do intervals when there is a group ride and never do a group ride when there is a race".

That's my own personal quote on training.

I wish I could just race 3 non-consecutive days a week and recover the rest of the time. That'd be the ultimate racing life.

Maybe when the kids are grown, I'll go back to Belgium one summer. Race Mon-Wed-Sat and sit at the cafe's talking politics the other four days. Man, they have it made.

I'm glad to hear it was a good time. I wish I could have been there; I ride with the Duke guys as a citizen. I'm waiting for a front derailleur to come in though, so I won't be making the Wake Forest crit either. Best of luck!

Huh? Does that crit have hills? Put your chain on the big ring and go for it. :D

well, this was a one time thing...I'm racing for real just about every weekend this spring...I dont need no stinkin practice crit when I got a real one...right? haha

plus, i'd like to focus on road races and TTs, since I dont have much of a sprint, crits arent really my style. oh...and I also dont like falling very much either.

some idiot drove his car onto the course while we were coming through, and everyone had to pack into one lane, so everyone braked really hard...a duke guy ran into me, and somehow we both stayed upright...the only casualty was my blinky light...it fell off and broke when he hit me. close calls arent much fun though.

You'd better get used to them, they're a lot better than crashing.

haha, I agree. this is my second year racing, and I had my fair share last year, and I think that if I didnt have that experience, I would have yard-saled all over the place. biggest thing I learned is to lean in before pulling away when you "make contact" with another rider.

Hi,

IMHO, I agree with you about practice crits. In my experience, practice crits seem to be as dangerous or more dangerous than the real thing. If there are any mid-week series races in your area (crit or road), then use those to see how different strategies and efforts do or don't pay off. Don't be afraid to blow up once in a while in a series race because, in my mind, that's what they help you learn about yourself. After all, I don't know of anyone who got a pro contract because they won a local series championship. ;)

Use what you learn in a series race to do better in bigger races.
