Bicycle Mechanics - 8 Speed Cranks with 10 speed (Ofmega)

Hi there,
I'm hoping to build up my bike with a 10 speed group (2nd hand Veloce in this case because it's cheap).
But the group is missing the chainset. I have seen some Ofmeage vantage chainsets about. They are pretty, and claim to be lightweight-ish, but are also "8-speed". Would that knacker a 10-speed chain?

If so, I'd better buy that Stronglight Impact :)

It won't hurt the chain but shifting might be a bit sluggish or the chain might want to "ride" between the two chainrings on occasion. Most riders report no problems.

Shimano's recommendation for using an 8-speed crank with 9 or 10-speed chains is "don't shift unless you are sitting down" which means don't shift under a big load.

And Sheldon Brown's take is that Shimano is saying this mainly in order to sell more chainrings and cranks. The difference is that the chainrings designed for 9- and 10-speed systems are spaced oh-so-slightly closer together. There may be a slim chance of the chain "riding" between them, but this is a very rare problem, and Sheldon thinks that it comes only in a weird and pointless shifting pattern that might be used by a newbie mountain bike rider. Which doesn't sound like the case with the OP.

Should be fine. There's no way you'd notice the difference in spacing between a "8s" crank and a "10s" crank.
