Mountain Biking - What is this bike worth and what year is it?

I am thinking of purchasing this Trek 9.8 (http://www.nsmain.com/adverts/new_bike.html), can anyone tell me what they think it is worth, and what year it is. From a previous post Black and Silver means that it is 2004, is this correct. The bike, I am told has a full xtr group set including xtr disc breaks. Also is there anything I should look out for when purchasing a secondhand carbon fiber bike like this one, such as issues with the frame etc....

I second locel. It's ugly as hell in my opinion but it looks faster than my truck too, so it's really where your priorities are.

That looks like a 2004 bike. It looks pretty shiny. That's a custom build, and would have retailed for almost $4k USD in 2004. It's possible to build up a lighter bike for less money using an Al frame and lighter seat/post/stem/bar. Check it thoroughly for visible wear and caveat emptor.

If it was in perfect shape and had hydraulic brakes, I'd guess around $2k.

that bike looks pretty sick in my opinion. with a thomson post, an fsa stem and a selle italia seat. woohooooo. :D

If raced by a pro then the bike has most likely been abused more in a single season than most of us could do in three years. Other than that it looks like a very nice bike as long as you are looking for a race bike. It isn't intended to be a trail bike. I don't even care much for Trek's but that bike is sweet.

The one thing I would ask the seller would be if he would have any problem sending it in for warranty for you if something would go wrong sometime down the road.

Trek changed their warranty policy a couple of years back to be lifetime on all their bikes except the DH stuff. http://www2.trekbikes.com/us/en/Inside_Trek/Warranty/Index.php
Unfortunately, it applies to the original owner. If you can get the receipt from the guy, then you can take a photocopy and put your name in place of his. I've seen it done.

That will work as long as the frame hasn't been registered.

Thanks for all your replies, the guy is selling it for £1000.

He says that :

It is only 6 months old
He has used it about 30 times offroad mainly - 30 mile rides
His mate who has something to do with a british cycling team built the bike up for him.


I agree that it looks to be a 2004 frame. I think I will just have a close look for any obvious signs of damage to the frame and go from there. I'm not a real serious rider, just the occasional weekend here and there, but to me if I can get a bike like this for £1000, that hasn't had too much use then it might be better than going for a new one that weighs quite a lot more and without all the nice componentry.

I would be a little reluctant to purchase a used CF frame. You never know what it's been through and one of the downsides with CF is that damage can be hidden. If possible, get it fully inspected. If you want to do an inspection yourself, some vasoline and a blacklight is a pretty good method for detecting exterior cracks. However, bear in mind that there may be damage on the inside that can't be detected easily.
