Tandem Cycling - Campy-converts, need your help.

Getting ready to make the swap from ShimaNO :D brifters, and F&R der. to Campy stuff.

What cables did you use for your Campy setups? The cable-ends that go into the ergo levers are different from Shimano to Campy...where did you find the long Campy cables?

I've used "universal" stainless steel cheapies for as long as I can remember.

You may have to file down the head of the 'universal' cables depending on the brand. Only takes a few minutes. Beats having the cable head stuck in the lever......

In the spirit of using an existing thread vs. creating a new one I have some questions. Some may recall I picked up a Burley Duet and the Shimano Brifters are gummed/broken beyond use even after Simplegreen soaks etc. I have given up on them and a tad frustrated.

So, I have been given some Campy Mirage brifters. Seems I can get my hand on these easier than some old Suntour Barcons. Crazy huh!?

So, should I try to use these brifters and buy that special "pully" (I forget the name) to work with my Deore RD? Or should I still keep my powder dry and get some Barcons off eBay and stay as low tech as possible?

My cocern, maybe campy mirage will give me fits too and I will be just as frustrated. I am a Campy and brifter novice.

Is your tandem an 8 or 9 speed?

Are the Mirage Ergo's 8 or 9 speed?

The pulley is called a "J-tek Shiftmate"

The bike has a 7 speed Suntour freewheel. I assume someone upgraded to Deore derailures.

The Campy brifters are the type with a lever on the inside of the body as well as a lever behind the brake lever. I am a novice and especially a Campy novice. Are all Campy brifters of the ERGO family? They are 8 spd per the prior owner. They came off a wrecked frame that tried to go into the garage while still on top of the car :(

The wind is a little bit out of my sails again as he cannot find the hardware to attach to the handlebar. I am learning. Just slower than I wanted. I am going to continue to watch eBay and look for a good set of barcons.

Campy 8 speed and Shimano 7 speed use the same 5mm cog spacing so your 8 speed Mirage Ergo levers will work with the Shimano 7 speed cassette & rear derailleur. You'll only use 7 of the 8 shifting positions on the levers and will end up with an "extra click" at either the top or the bottom of the shift range but it's easy to adapt to. FWIW: I used Campy 9 speed levers with Shimano 8 speed for about two years and it wasn't a problem getting used to the extra click.

The missing parts are probably the handlebar clamp band, 5mm post, and barrel nut assembly. You can buy them from a place like Brandford bike for about $20/set but your best bet might be checking with your local bike shop to see if they have any Campy or Shimano STI handlbar band & nuts laying around as I believe you make due with the Shimano mounting hardware.

Note: Ergo as in ergonomic is Campy's designation for it's integrated brake/shifter technoloy; analogous to Shimano's STI

Note: The rear cogs are not Shimano sadly. They are Suntour. Hence my intrepidation of a newbie trying to get Campy Ergo's to work with Shimano Deore and Suntour (freewheel) cogs. As back up I just won some Shimano barcons which I can put on friction and get on the road to see how captain and stoker get along. See if I can't find some fellow tandem types and or drive to a tandem ride and see what other folks are doing.

Bottom line, I can go either way, barcons or Campy Ergos....if I can help him find the ~handlebar clamp band, 5mm post, and barrel nut assembly~ If not then barcons it is for 2006.

Thanks everyone. Nashbar had Chorus brifters for $206 so I just converted my Cannondale. The Chorus 10sp brifters and the JTEK Shiftmate work great with the XT derailleur and 9sp cassette on the Cannondale. I filed down the heads on the Shimano brake cables and they fit fine. The derailleur cables fit without filing.
