"The 33"-Road Bike Racing - pic of Zabriskie's TdF TTT crash bike

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Yup , he had trouble unclipping.
BTW is there other damages on the bike?
Unclipping? No, this is his 2005 Tour de France Team Time Trial crash bike...

No other real obvious damage on the bike (I spent a good 10 minutes drooling all over it). He had an odd cabling setup for his front brakes... i'll have to see if I got a picture of it.

Did he have the 'fiddler' brake on his extentions? I noticed that Basso runs one so if DZ did also that would explain the weird cable routing to the front brakes.

The right brake cable comes from the right brake, moves forward along the left aerobar then crosses to come back down the right aerobar where it is threaded through a second brake lever (so he can control speed without losing position such as in a TTT or descent).
I know he says he hit a pothole on that crash, but when I looked at the tape frame by frame I bet you he popped his chain off because out of nowhere his crank arm went from a near full up position to a full down position and then he went squirrely. My guess is that this guy puts out SO much power that it is just dangerous to shift! Not bad for a lightweight!

he couldnt have been putting out all that much power, he was like 5 or 6 guys back at the time wasnt he, I mean I know its alot of power but not so much as to prevent him from shifting the RD.
It looks in the video like he popped a chain. He says in the interview afterwords that's what he thought happened.

I read somewhere that he said he hit a pothole, but maybe it was an early interview before he saw the tape?
As to the power, I believe they were all accelerating after the right hand turn and so it is not impossible to imagine 6 guys changing gears powerfully sprinting out of that last corner with 1 km to go and the Riis screaming in the earpieces!
There was a minor paint chip on the right side Cervelo logo. God damn, I love that bike!

Quite a while after the crash, he said that he had looked at the tape a bunch of times and gone over it in his mind hundreds of times and he was still not sure exactly what happened.

I sort of wondered if something had gotten between his rear wheel and seat tube since the clearance is so tight on those bikes. I've seen few sadder moments in sports than watching DZ cross the line alone that day.
Now seeing a photo of that machine all f'ed up brings me to more tears!
Maybe that zip tie on the Zipp wheel had something to do with it, I see it in the photo. (ok, if you can't tell i'm joking about that too, then I don't know what to tell you).

My God, move a little to the right and that should be me in the pic.

I took some more pictures of his bike (http://www.photoscene.com/sw/gallery/Cycling/20060224/Cervelo/) at the Cervélo booth of the expo in Santa Barbara today.
