Last night I competed unwantingly in my first race of '06. It was a fairly short course, but I had been warming up for about two hours prior, so I feel like I still got a workout.

My opponent attacked on an extremely steep switchback and it was all I could do to fend off the fury of well planned tactics. In my good fortune, I have been doing intervals to ward off this kind of blitzkrieg. All of a sudden, my rear tire began slipping all over the sand and I thought all was lost. The thought running through my head was, "would I be able to live with myself if I lose?". I finally caught traction and powered past the apex, dropped a couple gears and tore upwards like a raped ape. Turns out that was all he had. He stopped after it was obvious that I wasn't going to allow him to win. Victory was mine!

So much for 'dogged pursuit' meaning 'relentless'.
