when you guys are choosing parts for non racing components, do you not worry too much about the weights of things? or should i keep this in the back of my mind?

I do, but I know that I'm a pretty smooth rider, and I've used all the older, heavier parts and know that I haven't broken them.
For example, I've gone from a S&M Warpig to a Stricker to a LAF, a Redneck to a Redneck LT to a Redneck XLT, and Odyssey Dirt Forks to Race Forks.

okay...well i am pretty smooth and 135 lbs. ...but for example i like the Odyssey chock full of nuts stem. however it does weigh a bit more. i don't think i should be worried about every single once...right? i would rather buy products that i like/want than get one that is a little lighter. do you agree?

Of course; I could probably get away with riding that stupid Eastern frame with the holes in it, but that doesn't mean that I'd even consider riding it.

i was thinking, if they lost most of the other stupid machining and just left the machining where the seatpost goes, would that make the frame any weaker? I was also thinking they could do the same thing with the crossbars on handlebars...just a thought.

Eastern is currently testing both bars and frorks with holes in them.
Macneil is also testing bars with 12 holes under each gip(for weight savings, and also to keep the grips in place), and the bars are also 9 butted. They claim that they are just as strong as their regular 9 butted bars.

They probably are. The bars, though, are sealed from the weather via the grips. The frame isn't, and it isn't power coated. I don't know about you, but I'd most definitely not want water, sand, or anything else getting into my headtube and seattube, much less the bottom bracket.
And the seatpost clamp on the Eastern? I haven't seen a seatpost long enough to reach that in ages.
