Mountain Biking - hydros are jammed shut!!!PLZ HELP!!!

ok so i was working on my bike and accidently hit the brake lever on my hayes hfx 9s and yes they are now jammed shut. So how to I fix this????

You can use the skinny end of the thrangle wrech (came with your fork) to remove the brake lever. This will allow you to access the release pin which will retract the pads.

Make sure that you have a replacement release pin on hand since they can't be used after removal.

okay...here is what you do, i have no idea what Hank is talking about. take a small flat screw driver and pry apart.

no...not at all. ideally you want to use a very small one...then once you get a gap, use a large flat head so its less likely to dig in. even if you make a slight chip in the edge of the pad material with the first initial small screw driver, it won't ever hurt a thing. manuals usually recommend a screw driver as well :)

there's a definite possibility. I don't know what a thrangle wrench is, but I think he's talking about doing something at the brake lever side to release the pressure. That way you can slide the retainer pin from the top of the caliper to release the pads to get to the pistons to push them back. You shouldn't re-use the retainer pins so you should have a spare

that is silly to do all that. you can't hurt the pads. even if you gouge them out...they're just brake pads. its not like i am saying you can dip them in oil and they will still work.

He needs a thrangle wrench. If he can't find his he can go down to almost any auto supply stroe (Pep Boys, Autozona, etc.) and go to the counter and ask for a left handed muffler bearing wrench (metric). That will work just as well.

Then he can fix the complicated problem that he has with his brakes.

I can't find a left handed muffler bearing wrench. If I turn my right handed one over, will it be the same?

The metric one I had didn't work, turns out the Hayes actually need a standard wrench. ;)

just a guess here, would it work to open up the resevoir on the brake lever relieving the pressure in the lines? then presto, it would be pretty easy to seperate the pads?

note: this is just a guess, im not telling you to do it, im just wondering if it would work.

Once the pads are out, I use a 10 mm box wrench to push back the pistons back. The wrench will not hurt the pin which is easily bent.

you will chip a little bit off the pads, even if you do it carefully. but dont worry they will be fine.

It was an honest question man - sure, he could have probably found the answer elsewhere, but malicious sarcasm isn't really warranted IMO.

What I do when take a wheel out, get some cardboard in the caliper straight away. If someone comes to me with locked pads, I either try to get a playing card in between them andadd one at a time. Or use a screw driver ifthey are really locked. Otherwise you can rebleed your brakes, I do this every now and then because it is regular maintenance.
