Commuting - Early Morning/ Late Night Commuting Club -- Everything's Faster

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I got back from work an hour and half ago (12:30 a.m.) and thought I'd make an entry into the club. What I found especially great about tonight's commute was the speed at which I was able to do it. A combination of the lack of sun (which in Abq. is pretty intense) and lack of cars makes lights turn for you (or you can run the occasional 100% safe one) and lessens the amount of general noise that encompasses a rider, thus making for a smooth, fast ride.
I just thought I'd throw that one out. Anyone else ride faster at night or in the morning?

I love the lonliness of the early morning ride. Another thing that makes it go faster is that some of my lights flash yellow if I leave early enough.

Late night and early morning rides are possibly the best part of biking. I left for work on Wednesday at 5:30am since I was up anyway and saw maybe 3 cars. The most noise was made by the water being kicked up off the damp streets by my tires. If I didn't enjoy sleep so much, I'd love to commute in at that time every day. A few weeks ago I left a restaurant at around 10:30pm and had a similarly pleasing ride home. I've yet to be out on my bike between midnight and 5am though. I need to try that sometime.

Absolutely! When I ride home after midnight, it is FAST. Nobody on the bike path, nobody on the roads, and I can time the lights to hit them as they turn green. And I've usually got a few beers in me by that hour, so the time just flies by.
Early mornings are a different story, though. Morning traffic starts to pick up around 5:30 am here, and by 6 am there are scores of sleepy joggers out trying to get a run in before work.
