This from the Washington Area Bicyclists Association (waba.org):

The latest Capital Improvement Plan budget proposed by County Executive Doug Duncan for Montgomery County [Maryland] would cut spending on bike routes and trails by 40%-75% over the next three years!

Under the proposed budget, bike/pedestrian funding drops 40% in 2007, 2008, and 2009. Dedicated bike project funding drops 75% in 2007, 2008, and 2009 – down from $6M/year to $1.5M/year. This all occurs as the overall transportation budget increases by 8% during that time.

How will the budget affect bike projects? Matthew Henson Trail east segment will be delayed 3 years; the Rock Creek Trail bridge over Veirs Mill Road will be delayed 3 years, and likely killed; MacArthur Boulevard’s new shoulders and bike path delays further design to 2011 years and does not fund construction; and the Silver Spring Green Trail will be delayed 3 years.

Ah, you know for sure he's getting $$ from all sorts of special interests. It's really depressing...

When will this change? This is incredibly frustrating to me how we elect leaders to supposedly serve *our* interests, yet once in office all that they end up doing is furthering rampant capitalism at any cost. Am I the only one p**sed off by this?

(Not that there's anything wrong with capitalism as a concept; In reality it just needs a little more common sense and the brakes applied. I'm not a commie! )

I do not know if he is getting money from the dealerships. He probably thinks that that is what his constituents want.
