Calgary Snow

Tough ride in this morning (from the west) because the plows hadn't done the paths yet. A good workout! And the residential streets are brutal with all that slippery "brown sugar" mixture of snow, salt, and road grit. My cheap fat knobbies are sliding all over the place. I suspect studs wouldn't help much in these conditions. Does anyone have tires that are giving them decent traction on the streets? I've even gone against policy by riding on a few sidewalks since most of them are shovelled.

agree with you totally, the last few days have been tough!

I run studded tires, they sure help to grab the pathways, since the "base" now has a lot of ice

Nothing helps in the chop except really fat tires at low psi that come on the surly pugsley. I'm running a set of 700x30c knobbies on my jake. I've got the pressure down to about 20psi and I haven't had any problems on the path or downtown. The chop in my neighbourhood is another matter the only thing that works is momentum.

Saskatoon got about the same. It is depressing. I was out last weekend and the trails were great. Now, it will be a while until they are going to be good again. I love biking in cool temperatures and like the snow but I hate these days where it is a struggle to get anywhere.

From where I park to the college I attend is about 1 km, and about half of that is a hike across a field. Well, the last few treks across that field have been an adventure! I know exactly what you mean when you say, "I hate these days where it is a struggle to get anywhere". :(

Man, Yesterday was brutal. The wheel ruts were the only way you could get down 108th to the uni. Had to pull my bike onto a snow drift every time cars needed to pass. Sketchy.

haha, I did the exact same thing down 108th to the uni except I just gave her nuts and hoped the cars didn't hit me. I hate hike-a-biking through snow! Yeah, it was sketchy yesterday. At least they plowed the streets today giving good roads again. That is the good thing about Saskatoon is that the clearing of roads after snowfalls is relatively quick and they are also fairly quick at clearing the trails around the city.

I agree! The brown sugar is really hard to ride in. I found that the trails on the north side of the bow are much better (even with the snow and ice) than unplowed roads. The south side trail was just too icy for my setup, and with the roads, I just feel like I'm riding in deep sand....

Btw I'm running the cheap chinese studded on the front, and open knobbies on the back tire.

Any suggestions for churned up brown road snow???

There's no brown snow here in central Alberta ... it's all about a foot deep and pure white!
