I got my hands on a pair of obviously pretty well used Shimano 600 pedals. They looked to be be in decent shape, but didn't spin smoothly. I took them apart, cleaned everything and then bought new bearings (these are open bearings). I put the new bearings in and used grease for bearings that I bought at PEP BOYS. They now look great, but still don't spin well.

So, what have I forgotten to do, or done wrong, etc.?

I just recently rebuilt 600 pedals as well and was having trouble with getting them to spin smooth. I thought I counted 11 bearings per side when I took it apart.... well I had to use 12 per side to get them spinning smoothly. Also check to make sure your races are in good condition, my nut races weren't the best but will have to do.. also these are 1985 pedals.. Assuming yours are similar.

I too counted 11 bearings and that's what I used; I'll have to try 12. Everything else looks good, no sign of wear or pitting or anything; what type of lube did you use?
