hello all, i am looking to buy my first touring bike and i came across this ad: http://www.craigslist.org/nby/bik/136602543.html
it looks like a really nice bike but i don't know much about it other than what the ad describes, and i'm having trouble finding any info. does anyone know anything more about this type of bike? and is it worth the asking price? any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

For the value, you might want to post in the vintage forum. (They'll probably tell you it's overpriced...
:p ) Hard to tell the condition, but I've seen comparable bikes going for ~$200-250 on ebay. As the ad mentions, it is a "sport" touring bike and not a full-on tourer.
I'm restoring my mid 80's Raleigh Kodiak touring bike, so here's my 2 cents:
-If those 700c wheels are in good shape, that's a big plus. No converting from 27 inch to worry about.
-Those rims look narrow. Might be a minus if you want to fit some beefy tires. Also check also for frame clearance.
-barcons; big plus.
-Triple chainring; big plus.
-Sidepull brakes, minus. Cantilever brakes would be my first choice for stopping power and fender clearance. You might want to switch out the brake levers to something like the Cane Creek SRC-5 for more stopping power and comfortable hoods.
-Doesn't look like it has mid-brazeons for the fork; small minus.
-The chainstays look kinda short in the picture; big minus if it is.
If you're planning any kind of tour, you'll probably need to overhaul the bearings and get new tires, seat, cassette, chain, cables, brake levers, pads, etc. That can easily run ~$200. That said, I really like the way 70-80's lugged steel bikes ride and look.

I concur with post #2 100%. Also think you should ask this on C & V too, and wait for T-Mar to give you the rundown on the bike, and bigbossman to tell you how much it might be overpriced in the Bay area (I don't think it is way over market price - maybe about $50.00 - but I don't live there any more).
