Well, maybe I do.

I really like my road bike. But it really isn't all that comfortable. I rode a Planet X Kaffenback that my LBS had built up from extra parts, and I'm in love. It was really smooth. I think I want to build a cross bike, but I have a question.

Is the "smooth" ride because it is a steel frame, or because it has 32c tires? I don't want to buy a Al bike and have it be just as harsh as my C'dale. I would just buy the Planet X, but it is not my size and they can't get the frames anymore. I'm not looking to race. I only do some solo training rides and the occasional commute. Weekly mileage is 100 miles or so. But I don't want to give up too much as far as performance (I don't think this will be much of an issue).

BTW, Can anyone give me a few cross websites. Y'know bike porn and all. Thanks.

Not all aluminum frames ride like an old Cannondale. I haven't been on a recent C'dale road bike so I really can't compare, but the old ones were "special" like sitting on a freeking bell. Anyway, the fat tires help but so will the design. My old Redline Conquest is downright smooth even compared to my crap steel framed bike.

If you want a road bike/commuter for 32mm tyres (+ fenders), then a sport (http://www.somafab.com/extrasmoothie.html) style may be suitable.
You need canti brakes for larger clearance (eg for mud and snow) but I find that calipers are sharper and easier to adjust.

Funny you should link that frame. After some consideration, that's exactly what I bought. Thanks for the help.
