I've got a buddy who is in the market for a new frame. He just got into mtbing, and last summer got an 05 Kona Cowan. Now he regrets going with the hardtail, and is in the market for a FS frame. He'll be swapping the parts from the Cowan onto it and probably adding a new fork. Basically, he wants a burly trailbike.
He's looking for a 5" or 6" travel frame, and knowing his size and style, an air shock would be optimal. Decent pedaling characteristics preferred, of course. Probably something like the Specialized Enduro or Kona Dawg. Budget is one thousand dollars, or a little bit more.
Anyone have any suggestions? TIA.

Dawg, simply because all the parts will be interchangeable and he won't have to spend anymore money.
Or I could default to my favorite small company and recommend a company transition anbd recomment their Preston.

Excellent trail bike built around the originator, Rocky Mountain Slayer :)
Easy money to change to air as well. Total cost with air shock is around 1000usd. Excellent warranty too

That preston is a sweet ride. The guys at NSMB really seemed to like it. You might check out http://www.morewoodbikes.com/. Sycamore has a Shova ST, Keith had it out today and all the guys at the shop seem to like it. Don't know the price.
that transition looks like a really nice bike.
i like those type of bikes, that not a lot of people have.
the giant reign was said to be a really great trailbike and has a good pedal platform.

WOW. I really like the looks of the Morewood Bikes. Thought they might be really expensive though. Was reading my Local mountain biking magazine and they had an article on the Morewood bikes, the best part is that they are made in SA about 30minute drive from where I live. I have e-mailed them asking for prices and will see what happens
Banshee Pyre ?
Heckler?
Yeti AS-X?
Yeti 575 would be ideal, but probably a touch over his price range.

A friend at school recently got an Izumu DH, fully built w/ an X0 drivetrain and DH40. I think he got it for like $4500 or around there.
