I've worn out my 700 x 20s, and I'm about to buy a wider tyre. I commute to work and hit a lot of pot holes. Basic urban commute. I'm considering 700 x 25s. What do you use?

zaffiro. haven't put any miles on them yet, but they are affordable reputedly durable, and available in 25.
i rock 23's. lots of pot holes. not sure if there's a hell of a lot of difference between those and 25's. there's a better selection of tires to choose from in 23's
why do you spell tire with a y if you're from san deigo?

On my fixie I run 700x28 Armadillos, which are like other manufacturers' 700x30. We have notoriously potholed streets here, of course.
On my *cough, cough* geared bikes I run 700x25 (to clear fenders) and 700x38, respectively.

I use 700x25s. Used to run 23s with never a problem, but the 25s are smoother on the rougher pavement.

Vittoria Randonneur 700x28 in back a 23 in front. The Randonnuer is smooth and responsive, but also tough as a rock. I never got a flat in one year on it. It feels like a 23.

700x23 armadillos. no punctures in almost two years. and as previously mentioned, they're more like 25s.

+1, rock them in 23
Vittoria Radonneur's in a 32c kevlar bead. I'm all about big tires these days, unless of course I'm racing, which I rarely do.
zaffiro in 27x1 1/8. the rubber is kind of flattening out though, i think it's about to blow soon.

700x28, with some manner of tread.
i might go tubular when the snow leaves for good.
700x20, i'll probably go with 23s once i build up its real wheels though.

I’m pretty much limited to 23s or smaller on my bike but that doesn’t stop me from tearing up the rode with them. A high priced Conti Ultra Gatorskins lasted me a month when I first started out on my fixei but I think It would have lasted me a hole lot longer If I would have skided less and resisted the pedals more. If you wish to extend the life of your tyres buy a cheap pair of 23s or wider tires and rotate them because 20s or smaller should only be used in front or carried as a spare.
You don't need anything super fancy, just some 700x25's or larger if your frame allows for it. Tear it up man.

My last pair I bought where continental ultra sport. Both were showing wear after rotating and a month and half, so bought a victoria zaffiro for rear only. I haven't run on the bike with it yet though.

I just put on some Vittoria Rubino Techs in 700x25. So far, I like 'em. They provide a little more cushion than 23s.

I currently ride with a 23mm Conti 4 Season in front and a 23mm Armadillo in back.
This makes the best handling and flat proof combo I have yet found.
I have some new wheels on order and when they show up I plan to switch to 23mm Conti GP 4000s, front and back.
I hope I like them as well or better than my present setup.
I seriously considered 25mm, but, given the amount of money I've spent making my bike lighter, I decided to continue with 23mm.
I like the speed and efficiency 23mm gives me.

sounds like 700x25 may be the way to go.
this may be a dumb question, but will 700x25 automatically fit any bike that originally had
700x23? (i've only used the latter size)
thanks

I have 700 X 30/32c tires on mine. cyclocross. They rock for allyways and such. and work just fine on the street.
700x23c on the track bike - that's all the bigger that will fit on there. 700x42 front, 700x36 rear on the winter beater commuter frankenbike...

No, not necessarily. Depends on the frame. You might not have enough clearance between back tyre and seatstay bridge or tyre and seat tube; and/or between front tyre and fork crown or tyre and down tube. But chances are you'll have room for at least 700x25.

DEM JOINTS IS DA BAAAAHM!!!
seriously, they're hyper-comfy. i ride the cyclocross ones on my bad-weather bike, which for some reason i've been riding all weekend in spite of a clear sky and dry streets. i think they're 30's. they suck up all of the roadway plates, pockmarked fresh asphalt and massive potholes that seem to be all over NYC right now (ha. have fun at monstertrack out-of-towners!!!)
on my other, lighter, zippier, sexier bikes i rock 23's.
the tufos aren't particularly slow, but they're not what i'd call quick road tires either--since they aren't intended to be anyway. they certainly offer up way more resistance than thin, high-pressure slicks.
